Year round demand and an over saturated market mean that hotels in Venice can charge as they please for their rooms, and if you're looking for a little luxury on your trip it's wise not to judge a hotel by its price bracket alone; proximity to the Piazza San Marco or Venice beach can add more to the price of a room than its facilities are worth. If you're looking for the best deal on luxury hotels in Venice decide how much you can afford to pay, look for a hotel just outside the San Marco or Lido sestieri (districts) and make your reservation online well in advance.

The following are some of the top spots in Venice to lay your weary head. Expect to pay anywhere from €300 to €900 per room per night at any of these establishments.

One of the most luxurious, and most expensive, hotels in Venice, the Cipriani is a haven of decadence and indulgence. From the Olympic-size pool to the butler service, the Jacuzzis in every suite and the lavish décor it's difficult to bring yourself to leave the confines of the hotel and go out sightseeing. Arrive by gondola at the hotel's private dock, sip a cocktail from the bar overlooking the waterfront and just enjoy the impeccable service.

The most glamorous of hotels in Venice, the Danieli is a magnificent Gothic palazzo complete with Murano glass chandeliers, lavish pink marble floors, period antiques and panoramic views from the rooftop restaurant. It may all seem a little over the top though if you're not a fan of gilt and brocade on every surface.

Another hotel in the same chain, the Gritti Palace is the former home of the city's Doge and one of Venice's most prestigious addresses. This 16th -century palace has stunning views over the waterfront, antique-filled rooms and impeccable service.

Another top notch choice, the Bauer has been a favourite of artists and royalty for centuries. The spacious rooms are decked out in opulent style with antique furniture, lush fabrics and soft lighting but ask for a room in the 13th -century building overlooking the Canal Grande, as they have much more character than those the newer annexes.

If you're looking for luxury without the old-school Rococo opulence the Ca' Pisani is the design hotel for you. Dark wood and chrome mix happily with bamboo flooring, red leather sofas and classic furniture and fittings from the 30s and 40s. The beds are collector's items, the artwork is from leading figures in the Futurist movement and the restaurant serves contemporary fusion food. It's a far cry for most hotels in Venice and a haven for anyone looking for something a little different.
