For a city renowned for its lack of a single cheap hotel Venice has improved remarkably in recent years as the city authorities have relaxed planning regulations and the number of budget hotels has finally increased. The key to getting a good rate for accommodation in a good location is to shop around and book well in advance.
Venice Italy seems to be in high season year round and you'd be advised to book accommodation at least three months before you plan to arrive. And if you're planning to visit between June and August make it six months. Prices can be as much as €140 for a bed in a one-star hotel in high season so choose the time of your visit carefully if you're on a tight budget.
Being at the heart of Venice's old town is a key part of the city experience and although you'll find a better selection of cheap hotels outside the city centre in places such as Mestre, Jesolo and Cavallino, having to troop in and out of outlying areas can spoil your whole Venetian experience. Finding a cheap hotel in the Venice beach (Lido) area can be nigh on impossible.
Best & Most Central, Cheap Hotels in Venice:
One of the most tasteful choices in the one star bracket, the Locanda Montin is a central hotel located above an upmarket restaurant. The bright spacious rooms have subtle décor, deep red bedspreads and good views. Most rooms have a private bathroom and juliette balcony and are worth their price. Expect to pay between €100 and €140 for an ensuite room.

However, the heavy décor can make the rooms feel smaller and of the 15 rooms only two have en suite bathrooms. Expect to pay about €120 a night in mid season.

It's a really friendly spot though and if you're planning to spend most of your time out sightseeing it's an excellent option. Prices range from €60-90 for a room with a shared bathroom, €80-135 for rooms with an en suite.
