Cheap Flights to Venice - Venice, Italy Airports

Cheap flights to Venice

Thanks to stiff competition between scheduled airlines and their no-frills counterparts cheap flights to Venice are relatively easy to come by - if you book well in advance and avoid major festival times and the peak season in Italy. Venice, however, is eternally popular so don't leave things to the last minute even if you're planning to travel on a wet Wednesday in November.

Choosing your flights: Venice Italy airports

Venice has two airports, the main hub is Marco Polo Airport, a sparkling new creation opened in July 2002 to cope with Venice's ever increasing traffic. The airport is situated on the north side of the lagoon and is linked to the city by bus, boat and taxi. The city bus is the cheapest way into town (tickets cost less than €3) and takes about 25 minutes to get to the Piazzale Roma in Venice.

However, the scenic one-hour journey on the Alilaguna hydrofoil (tickets about €10) is a much more atmospheric way to arrive in the city. The hydrofoil also goes to the Lido and Murano. Private water taxis will drop you off at Piazzetta di San Marco but are much more expensive and can cost more than €80. Alternatively, land taxis head to town in about 15 minutes and only cost about €30.

The other airport, used by low cost carriers such as Ryanair is the tiny San Guiseppe Airport in Treviso. Buses from the airport to the Piazzale Roma in Venice take about an hour and a quarter and cost Euros 4.50.

On your return trip make sure to leave enough time to catch the bus as they leave well before the departure time of flights. Alternatively you can catch bus No 6 to the main train station in Treviso and head into Venice by rail. A taxi to Venice from Treviso airport costs about Euros 35.

Other considerations when booking flights to Venice Italy

Apart from the cost of your ticket and the choice of airports to fly into there are some other things to keep in mind when booking cheap flights to Venice. If you're on a very short break the cheaper flights to Treviso airport may not be such a great deal if you're going to spend much of your time getting to and from the airport, or paying for a taxi fare just to maximise your time in the city.

It's also worth considering booking your flight as part of a package, sometimes you'll be able to book cheap flights to Venice as part of an accommodation package and this can work out to be a better deal than making bookings separately.
