Even the most basic Rome tourist information introduces the legend of the city's beginnings: the story of Romulus and Remus. The saga, as myth has it, began when these twin sons (nursed by a she wolf and fathered by Mars, god of war) fought one another for the right to build a great city on the banks of the Tiber River. Victorious, Romulus named the city ' Rome ' in his own honour.
Though it's true Rome wasn't built in a day, historians accept that civilization was firmly in place by 750 BC. Trade, warfare and battle caused the city (and its reputation) to spread quickly; by 130 AD the Roman Empire controlled Britain, the majority of Europe, some of Asia and Northern Africa.
