Rome has two airports: Aeroporto Leonardo da Vinci (also known as Fiumicino) and Ciampino. Fiumicino typically handles the larger airlines such as British Airways, Alitalia and Lufthansa. Ciampino, on the other hand, regularly services the smaller budget airlines which base their business on cheap flights:

  • FlyGlobespan flies from Edinburgh and Glasgow
  • Ryanair services London area airports
  • easyJet flies from Newcastle, Nottingham and London airports
  • Thomsonfly leaves from Coventry

Knowing when to visit can be your best tool when searching for a cheap flight to Rome. Tourism booms around Easter and lasts until the end of October. Most travellers prefer to visit in spring or autumn when the weather is sunny and warm; though Roman weather is generally pleasant year round, in summer the heat can get pretty unbearable with temperatures exceeding 43ºC (110ºF). For this reason most Romans escape to the coast and mountains, leaving the city less crowded.

Online travel sites are a good resource for finding inexpensive flights as they offer instant price comparisons between competing airlines. Travel agents can also answer questions about finding and booking a cheap flight to Rome.
