Mid-range Accommodation in Paris - Weekend Breaks

Accommodation in Paris varies from tiny, cheap places with the showers down the hall, to swanky luxury hotels on the banks of the Seine. You'll find advice on the kind of luxury hotel Paris has to offer elsewhere on this site, as well as information about cheap hotels in Paris. This page is for people on a mid-range budget, who want to avoid the real dives but don't have the cash for the Ritz. For more than €50 per person per night, you can expect a clean room in a reasonably central location, usually with a TV and shower too. For picturesque hotels and good views, expect to pay more than €60.

The area around Marais and Beauborg (where you will find the Centre Pompidou and some lovely restaurants) has plenty of reasonably-priced hotels. La Vallée on Rue St-Denis is well situated, about ten minutes' walk from Notre Dame Cathedral and the Louvre. Rooms have been offered there off-peak for as little as €40 per person per night, although normal prices are nearer €50. The Grand Hotel Jeanne d'Arc on Rue de Jarente is more expensive, starting from around €60. It's a former 17th-century house, and some rooms have rooftop views. If you want to stay there, you should book well in advance, as it is often booked out.

If you're looking for somewhere near the Sacre-Coeur, prices at the Eden Hotel start at around €52. Bedrooms all have a shower, WC, telephone and television. Or there's the Hotel de Charme Ermitage, built under Napoleon III. Bedrooms all have either a bath or a shower, as well as a WC, hair-dryer and telephone. Prices start at €78 for a single room.

Other accommodation in Paris can be found in the Montparnasse area. This isn't the most famous part of Paris, but it is home to the Tour Montparnasse, a 60-floor building with fantastic views from the top and a shopping centre at the bottom. The Gare Montparnasse is where a regular in-line skating race begins, usually on a Friday night. If you're tempted to join in, be warned that the route is sometimes tricky for beginners. Most tourists are content to just watch hundreds of Parisians gliding through the streets. Most of the hotels in the Montparnasse area are for business travellers, there are exceptions. Istria on Rue Campagne-Premiere used to be popular with a number artists and entertainers, including Surrealist artist Marcel Duchamp and risqué dancer Josephine Baker. A twin standard room will cost around €140 for two people. Montparnasse is also home to Des Academies, about ten minutes' walk from the Gare Montparnasse. A single room costs between €40 and €50. There's also the Hotel du Parc Montparnasse, where the price of a double room is around €80. You pay less if you opt for a shower over a bath in your room. If you're prepared to have a room without a shower, you can pay as little as €50. (There are showers elsewhere in the hotel that you can use.)

This page gives you some hints about where to look, but it's not possible to cover the full range of mid-priced accommodation in Paris on one webpage. So use the Internet for comparing prices and spotting the latest discounts. Then you can either book online or practise your French by booking over the phone.
