New York City sightseeing is a larger than life experience that few people will ever forget. From enormous skyscrapers to historical museums to rolling parks and luxury boutiques -the Big Apple has it all.
New York is divided into a number of regions, each containing its own fascinating landmarks and attractions. Some of the well-known areas of the city include the Upper West Side, the Bronx, Soho, and downtown Manhattan. The volume of fascinating sights in the city means that if you are pressed for time your best bet is to explore the region that interests you the most and leave the rest for another trip.
Upper East Side and Upper West Side :
These culturally diverse areas contain some of New York's most prominent museums, galleries and historical monuments. The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MOMA) is the largest art museum in the western hemisphere, while the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum contains extensive collections of historical and contemporary designs spanning back over a century. Other famous art museums in the area include the Frick Collection, the Neue Galerie New York and the uniquely designed Guggenheim Museum. Travel into the past at the American museum of Natural History and the Jewish Museum and visit the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world, the Cathedral of St John the Divine. Finish off your experience with an evening of theatre at the Lincoln Center, the largest venue for performing arts in the world.
Central Park :
Exploring Central Park on its own can take a whole day. Visit the Italian, French and English styled Conservatory Garden, the Shakespeare rock Garden containing replicas of the plants in the poet's own garden and the Jon Lennon inspired mosaic in Strawberry Fields. Stand in front of the famous Bethesda Fountain before returning to your childhood and hopping on a ride or two at the Friedsam Memorial Carousel. If you feel like a bit of exercise, do a cycling tour around the perimeter of the park and see all the sights in one go.
Midtown East and Midtown West :
The Midtown areas are known for their museums and historical landmarks. Visit religious sights such as St Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue and architectural landmarks including the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Station and the Seagram Building. Well-known museums and galleries in Midtown include the International Center of Photography and the distinctive American Folk Art Museum. While you are in the Midtown area, be sure to visit the impressive UN Headquarters and if you can squeeze it in, finish the day off by taking in a show at Carnegie Hall.
Brooklyn and the Bronx :
These are two regions that visitors to New York sadly seldom visit. Both areas are buzzing with life and provide a wider angle on New York life. Visit the one and only Yankee Stadium and take a trip back in time at the site of the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage. Those who appreciate fine art should also save some time for the Brooklyn and Bronx Art Museums. Finally, leave city life for a moment as you step into the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.
Soho :
Soho is an area with a flare all of its own. Full of trendy stores and exclusive boutiques, the region is a shopper's paradise. Be sure to pay a visit to the New Museum of Contemporary Art which features diverse exhibitions across all media types.
Manhattan and Murray Hill:
Manhattan is an area of contrasts where giant skyscrapers dwarf historical buildings, wealth meets poverty and the past meets the future. The area also contains many of New York's most well-known sights including the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the World Trade Center Memorial. This is one area of the city that every visitor should see. Be sure to include the South Street Seaport area in your travels. If you are planning to attend a Broadway show, you can get discount tickets at the Seaport TKTS booth while you're there. Murray Hill is home to one of the most famous buildings in the world, the Empire State building. Ride to the top of the building and gaze at the panoramic views of the Big Apple. If you're brave, take in the New York Skyride, a ride that plummets two stories down the building. Wind down after the experience by exploring the Morgan Library, famous for its medieval and Renaissance manuscripts and collections.
Flushing :
If museums are your thing then you simply have to pay a trip to Flushing. Famous museums in the area include the Queens Museum, famous for its Panorama model and the New York Hall of Science. Finish your excursion in the sunshine with a trip to the Queens Wildlife Center.
