Riads in Marrakech - Morocco Accommodation, Medina

Marrakech's status as North Africa's hippest city is largely thanks to its enviable accommodation scene. Corralled by the ancient medina walls and lost within the tangled backstreets of the souk are some of the planet's best boutique hotels. Most of Marrkech's riads began life as wealthy merchants' houses back in the 18th century; and their shady courtyards have been providing welcome rest bite from dust and bustle of city life ever since. Read our article on Marrakech Hotels.
Over the past few decades a number of riads have been restored to provide some of Marrakech's most charming luxury accommodation. And the best bit is that a night or two in a riad is well within most people's financial reach (much to the chagrin of the more expensive faceless chain hotels).
Most riads can be booked out in their entirety (typically 4-6 rooms) or on a room by room basis. However, they all have one thing in common; and that's their popularity. so make any reservations as far in advance as possible.
Villa el-Arsa - Climb through the Lilliputian door of Villa el Arsa and you're met with a serene, whitewashed portrait of Marrakech life that couldn't be further from the chaos of nearby Djemma el Fna. The courtyard gives way to small (but perfectly formed) swimming pool and two comfortable lounges. The four first-floor bedrooms have been sensitively decorated (think minimalist Morocco) and are all ensuite. Meals are served on the roof terrace and serious sun-worshippers have plenty of space to kick-back and relax. Double rooms start at a very reasonable 900 Dirham (£55), but you'll need to book early Tel: 044 42 63 26
Riad Magi - Riad Magi certainly isn't the easiest place to find in the medina, but any effort is well rewarded. Once you've got your bearings you soon realise that you're on the doorstep of Djemma el Fna and couldn't be better situated. Orange trees double as parasols in the courtyard and provide lodging for curious chameleons. Rooms are well-appointed and decorated in a traditional style, and there's a sunny rooftop patio. Doubles cost from 800 Dirham (£50) Tel: 044 42 68 88
Riad 72 - If you want to go all-out there can be few better places to spend your Dirham than in Riad 72. The ingredients are all there; just four private rooms, a pool, a hammam, plenty of greenery and plenty of peace and quite. The Italian owner's influence is palpable in everything form the décor to the cuisine; making Riad 72 one of the most coveted addresses in Marrakesh. Double rooms cost between € 100-200 depending on the season. Tel: 44 38 76 29
