Holidays in Morocco cover the spectrum from culinary tours and camel safaris to cheap and cheerful family packages. There's something for everyone, it's just a case of knowing where to start:
Walking holidays in Morocco
An hour's drive south of Marrakech on the R203 and the road begins to climb sharply before petering out in the soporific village of Imlil. At the head of the valley towers the saw-tooth peak of Jebel Toukbal, Morocco's highest mountain at 4167m. During the peak trekking season, April-June, the snow-capped summit is shrouded in cloud and presents a formidable (if not technical) challenge. However, the surrounding valleys are cat's-cradled with a wealth of well-trodden paths and passes. Local guides will be happy to tailor a hike for anything from three hours to three weeks.
The smartest address in Imlil is undoubtedly Kasbah Toukbal, described by Condé Nast Traveler as having 'the best rooftop views in North Africa', what they don't mention is that they've also got one of the best hammams. The Kasbah has been sensitively rebuilt (including a stint as a Tibetan temple for the filming of Martin Scorsese's Kundun) and a five percent surcharge goes directly back to the surrounding Berber villagers. Luxury Morocco holidays
Morocco certainly knows a thing or two about luxury. First time visitors are spoiled for choice, but if you want to really tune-out and relax; few places can beat Tigmi. Styled as the country's first 'rural retreat' once you enter the rose coloured walls of Tigmi you'd be easily forgiven for thinking that you'd slipped between the pages of Vogue Interiors. Inside the décor is painfully hip; you're met with a jumble of private courtyards, surrounded by a patchwork of fields leading to the Atlas Mountains beyond. You're in the middle of nowhere, there's nothing to do (except cool off in the pool and have the odd massage) and that's exactly what's so charming about the place. Adventure holidays in Morocco
Just about everything you do in Morocco turns out to be an adventure, but if you really want to get the adrenaline flowing there are plenty of options. The Atlas Mountains provide some of the best (and most accessible) hiking on the continent along with the Dadès and Todra Gorges further to the east. Travelling north towards the Algerian border the town of Merzouga marks the beginning of the Sahara desert and giant humpback dunes of Erg Cebbi, form where it's easy to arrange camel trekking and 4WD safaris. To blow away the sand and grime head to Essaouira for a spot of surfing on the Atlantic breakers.
