London Zoo UK - Regents Park, Tickets

London Zoo is an attraction that many people mistakenly emit from their itineraries when visiting London. The zoo first opened its doors to the public over a century ago and since then has gone on to become one of the most famous zoos in the world.

The zoo is situated in the outer circle of Regents Park. The nearest tube station to the park is Camden Town but the walk from the station is quite a long one, so it may be advisable to rather take a bus to the zoo. The C2 bus runs from Oxford Circus to the Gloucester Gate of Regents Park, while the 274 runs from Oxford Circus to the Ormonde Terrace entrance of the park.

The London zoo houses over 650 different species of animals including lions, tigers, gorillas, giraffes, bears and hippos. The aquarium is filled with exotic fish and water creatures, while the insect house is inhabited by numerous creepy crawlies including giant spiders, ants and beetles. For younger visitors there is also a children's zoo filled with cats, dogs, sheep, rabbits, birds and other domestic animals.

Conservation efforts at the zoo are extensive and it currently participates in over 145 breeding programs. The BUGS (Biodiversity Underpinning Global Survival) exhibition gives visitors the chance to witness conservation in action, while the Adopt an Animal program allows individuals to adopt specific endangered animals and contribute to the costs of keeping them alive and healthy.

It is advisable to set aside at least half a day for a trip to the zoo as there really is so much to see and do. There are numerous different routes around the zoo including the reptile route, the aquarium route, the birds of prey route and the ape and monkey route. Feeding sessions and demonstrations take place daily; you can phone the zoo in advance to find out the times of those that interest you.

The zoo is open from 10am daily and closing times vary from 4pm to 5.30pm depending on the season. Adult tickets cost £13; children's tickets cost less than £ 10.Children under three get in free of charge and special discounts apply for students, senior citizens, groups and disabled individuals.
