The city is one of the most expensive in Europe and its rising popularity as a destination for weekend breaks means that accommodation, although plentiful, isn't exactly competitively priced.
On average expect to spend about €60 for a single room and between €100 and €140 for a double. If you're on a tighter budget you may want to look for a bed and breakfast in Dublin instead.
In general, prices on the north side of the city are cheaper than those on the south, though you're a little further from nightlife and the quality of the hotels on offer may not be as good. The following options, both north and south of the river, are some of the best cheap hotels in Dublin :
The Castle Hotel (01-874 6949) on Great Denmark Street is one of Dublin's oldest and offers huge rooms with slightly shabby but characterful old furnishings and a grand sweeping staircase rising from the main hall. The jovial owner completes the illusion of being in a typical 19th -century home by recounting tales of old Ireland from the bar. Double rooms cost about €100.
Also north of the river and convenient to the city centre, is Walton's Hotel (01-878 3131; 2-5 North Fredrick Street) just north of Parnell Square. This friendly place has a range of contemporary rooms with simple, modern furniture and good bathrooms. Expect to pay about €100 for a double.
South of the Liffey, one of the best-value options, though not exactly dripping with character, is Jury's Inn in Christchurch. The corporate-style rooms can sleep up to three people and cost about €100. It's within walking distance of all the sights and nightlife and at this price and location you can't really fault it.
If you'd like something a little more unusual Number 31 (01-676 5011; 31 Leeson Close) is the former home of one of Ireland's leading architects, Sam Stephenson. This 60s-style pad has floor to ceiling windows, a sunken living room and a mirrored bar. Rooms in the coach house are full-on retro style while those in the main Georgian house are more chi chi. Expect to pay about €120 for a double.
