Of course, the more convenient location, the more expensive the bed. It's worth the expense though as Dublin city transport is notoriously inefficient and attempting to get to the suburbs after midnight is a slow and painful process as buses run infrequently on a limited number of routes only, and you can spend hours queuing for a taxi.

City centre bed and breakfasts in Dublin vary enormously in quality and price. Expect to pay between €50 and €120 for a decent room with an ensuite bathroom. You'll find a cluster of mediocre B&Bs on Gardiner Street, just east of O'Connell Street - the north side's main thoroughfare. They're close to the bus station and Connolly railway station but generally nothing to write home about.
One of the best is the Anchor Guesthouse (01-8786913) at No. 47 with double rooms from €75. It has a range of elegant Georgian rooms and dishes up a wholesome Irish breakfast that'll keep you going all day.
Another good option, just north of O'Connell Street is the Charles Stewart (01-878 0350; 5-6 Parnell Square), a real steal at just €65 for a double. It has spacious, comfortable rooms with small ensuite bathrooms and very friendly service.
In general, B&Bs south of the Liffey, are of better quality but they're also more expensive. However, as most of Dublin's main attractions and the city's best nightlife are here it is a more popular area to stay.
Grafton Guest House (01-679 2041; 26-27 South Great George's Street) is in the thick of the action and has stylish rooms with dark wood furniture and trendy retro wallpapers. Expect to pay between €50 and €75 for a double room.
Another good accommodation bet on the south side, but a little more upmarket, is Waterloo House (01-660 1888; 8-10 Waterloo Road) just off St Stephen's Green. The rooms are spread between two gorgeous Georgian houses draped in ivy, and are decorated in typical period style with muted colours and antique furniture. A double room here costs about Euros120.
You'd be well advised to book in advance when looking for a bed and breakfast in Dublin as the best options get booked out quickly, especially during holiday periods. If you arrive in the city without a bed, head for a Dublin Tourism office. For a €4 fee they'll save you the footwork by calling around bed and breakfasts in Dublin until they find you a bed. The most central office is just off Grafton Street in St Andrew's Church at 2 Suffolk Street.
