Forty-four storeys of unashamed luxury watch over the Port Olympic, making it the country's tallest building. Besides being one of Spain's most structurally ambitious projects; it's also one of the most unusual. The architectural innards are proudly displayed on the outside and the surrounding plaza is dominated by an enormous steel lattice fish sculpted by Frank Gehry (the man behind Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum).
No matter how good the Hotel Arts looks form the outside, it's nothing compared with the interior. The hotel's list of amenities makes for exhausting reading. With close to 500 rooms the hotel somehow manages to maintain a relaxed air. The hotel walls double as one of the city's premier art galleries, displaying more than 1000 canvases.
Guests are divided between business types (there are 14 function rooms) and well-heeled tourists. Days can be spent working out in the well-appointed fitness centre, then unwinding in the spa. Mealtimes are not for the indecisive as the hotel has a choice of five restaurants and 500 different wines. If you've got any energy left you can then practise your footwork in the city's largest ballroom.
Accommodation varies from ensuite doubles to three bedroom apartments, with prices pretty much in-line with other Ritz Carlton establishment across the globe. If you're looking for a touch of modernist class, and like your creature comforts, the Hotel Arts Barcelona is difficult to beat.
