Travel insurance is one of the most variable kinds in terms of price and cover. If you're lucky you'll be able to find a great deal by looking around: if you're unlucky your policy will cost you several times as much as it need have. One sure-fire way to save money if you're a fairly frequent traveller is to take out annual travel insurance. And seeing as most British families now take two, three or even four holidays a year this is becoming an option which isn't just for business people and nomads.

Some insurers will let you extend a multi-trip policy to cover you and your partner when you travel separately. It's also possible to find annual travel insurance policies which, as with car insurance, offer you a no claims discount. although whether this is as cost-effective as it is with car insurance you're legally obliged to have probably depends a lot on the policy.

Travel insurance: beware the small print

Travel insurance is now big business. Everybody, seemingly, is at it, even Manchester United: the club has started up a travel insurance sideline for fans, who receive discounts if a certain amount of goals are scored in the Premiership and/or Champions League. But whatever kind of travel insurance you're thinking of taking out and with whomever, there are a few things worth noting. Travel insurance has always been notorious for tricky small print: pre-existing medical condition clauses which mean that you are not covered for an undeclared condition which requires treatment when you are away; clauses which stipulate that items in a locked car are not insured at night; anything which happens if you've drunk alcohol, and so on and so on.

Since the transparency laws relating to insurance were tightened up at the beginning of 2005 there should be less likelihood of getting tripped up in this way. Still, it's worth making sure you know exactly what is in your policy before you buy it, let alone get on a plane with it. Check also how much your annual travel insurance policy will pay out for items which are lost, stolen or destroyed, and how much excess is stipulated. A more expensive policy may be worth it to receive compensation closer to the full value of your possessions should anything go really wrong.
