When most people think AA, it's not travel insurance that immediately springs to mind. But the Automobile Association will also look after people on planes and trains - and boats for that matter. Benefits in the standard AA travel insurance policy include up to £10 million in medical cover, £25,000 for personal accidents, the same amount for legal expenses and up to £5,000 cancellation cover - all of which you would expect from any decent travel policy, although the sums involved are fairly generous. Slightly more unusual are the special rates offered by AA travel insurance for single parent families and optional wedding cover to go with the oft-seen optional golf and winter sports cover.

Schemes offered by AA travel insurance

The AA offers annual multi-trip schemes which also cover breaks in the UK, and single trip policies. They will insure people for single trips up to the age of 79, although multi-trip cover and cover for couples stops at 64. Various activities are excluded and it's worth checking the policy document carefully concerning these because you may have to get specialist cover if something you're planning on doing is mentioned. There's no diving with sharks, for example, although this is a popular tourist option in some destinations (you're in a strong cage when you do it, incidentally).

For more information about AA travel insurance, visit the website at www.theaa.com (which also has all the other AA stuff such as road maps and pub guides). You can obtain a online quote there and buy a policy for 10% less than the standard rate. But before you choose any travel insurance policy make sure you do some travels of your own around the sites of various insurers to get an idea of what will suit you best. Travel insurance, like every other kind, varies widely in value depending on who you are and what you require.
