Thailand has many popular tourist attractions, ranging from beach resorts in south Thailand, cities and towns, national parks and areas of natural beauty, to the famous Golden Triangle on the border of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar in the far north. The Golden Triangle area, known for its opium smugglers, is accessible to tourists from Chiang Rai or from villages in the area up in the hills near the border. There are Chinese settlers in this region of Thailand and many different hill tribes, which makes a visit to that region an interesting cultural experience. There are impressive sites of historical and archaeological interest. Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai-Chaliang historical parks have some magnificent monuments from the Siamese empire. Thailand has some stunning examples of Buddhist temples and interesting architecture. Chiang Mai, the laid-back capital of the north, is very popular with travellers and is a good place to do meditation, cookery or massage courses. The rural areas of Thailand are popular for trekking, hiking, elephant rides and rafting. Areas in north Thailand are good for this. In the north-west, and west Thailand, it is possible to cross the border to Myanmar and visit villages of refugees from Myanmar. The towns of Mae Hong Son, Pai and Mae Sariang in the north-west are popular with travellers. This area of Thailand is quite mountainous and the scenery is stunning. Pai has waterfalls and hot springs in the vicinity.
North-east Thailand has ancient temples similar to those at Angkor in Cambodia and Thailand's oldest and best-known national park, Khao Yai National Park, where the film, The Beach, was filmed. Traditional weaving takes place in villages in this region.
Places of interest near Bangkok are the ancient ruins at Ayuthaya, once capital of Siam, the bridge at the River Kwai and Three Pagodas Pass on the border with Myanmar. Bangkok itself is worth a visit with its stunning wats (temple complexes), Thai boxing matches, and bazaars.
There are some lovely tropical islands in Thailand's southern region. There are diving resorts down the Andaman coast and in south-east Thailand. The Andaman coast is closed from May to November because of the monsoon but boasts some of the loveliest diving and snorkelling places in Thailand. Islands range from the larger resorts like Phuket to some small uninhabited islands where it is possible to arrange to camp there. Southern resorts such as Pattaya and Phuket are famous for their delicious seafood. The Andaman coast has incredible scenery to be enjoyed with the dramatic limestone formations going down into clear, blue sea and beaches with unbelievably soft white sand. Rock-climbing is very popular in the Krabi region. The east coast has islands which are suitable for family holidays and backpackers alike.
