Thailand BungalowsThese can mean self-contained rooms apart from the main block, or they can refer to bamboo huts on some of the islands in the south, or the huts on stilts in the villages in the north. National Parks often have bungalow-style accommodation, which consists of bamboo huts usually raised from the ground on stilts. They are usually designed for two or more people.
Thailand bungalows vary in style, cleanliness and comfort. Khao Sok National Park has floating bamboo huts on the reservoir. Some bungalows can be made of bricks and concrete and are proper buildings with all mod cons. Usually they are made of bamboo. Sometimes they have mattresses on the floor to sleep on, but occasionally it is possible to find bungalows with proper beds. It is important to have mosquito nets as there is little protection against mosquitoes in bamboo huts with gaps in the bamboo. Some Thailand bungalows come equipped with mosquito nets.
Air-con is only available in concrete and brick bungalows, but usually bamboo bungalows should have a fan and the walls let in any breeze at night which can be more comfortable than sleeping in an enclosed room. On some of the smaller islands and in some of the more remote locations, electricity is only available for part of the evening and night, so sleeping in an open air bamboo hut can be a relief if there is a power cut. Some people choose to sleep on hammocks strung up outside their bungalow or on the beach. The disadvantage of this is that there is little protection against insects unless you have a mosquito net strung up over the hammock.
Some bungalows have attached bathrooms with Asian or Western toilets and a shower. On many of the islands on the south-west coast, the bungalows are destroyed every rainy season by the monsoon and the resorts have to be rebuilt every year. Bamboo is a very cheap, versatile material which grows very quickly and is a more environmentally-friendly way of building on the islands.
