Increasing numbers of foreign visitors are now turning to the Spanish islands for holiday properties as an alternative to the cheap hotel package deals which dominated Spain’s tourist industry in the 1970s and 80s.
Renting a private villa on one of the Balearic or Canary islands is no longer the preserve of the rich and famous. These days it’s an affordable option for middle market holidaymakers thanks to a proliferation of villas and apartments in recent years and the advent of cheap charter flights linking the islands with most major European destinations.
Spanish Island Properties: Balearic or Canary islands?
Between them, the two archipelagos offer something for everyone in terms of tourist facilities, natural beauty, climate and accessibility. Villas range from the impossibly sumptuous (Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones own a Spanish island holiday home though they have yet to be lured into the letting business) to reasonably priced holiday homes on complexes with communal facilities.
The Balearic Islands lie closest to the Spanish mainland and consist of Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. Mallorca and Ibiza are the two busiest islands but it’s still possible to find beautiful villas to rent in tranquil spots, far from the tourist hordes. Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca all have their own international airports and Formentera is reached by a short ferry hop from Ibiza.
A Canary Island villa holiday is ideal for those wanting a combination of winter sunshine and the freedom and space afforded by self-catering accommodation. The Canaries are closer to Africa than Spain and enjoy year round sun with temperatures ranging from 18 degrees centigrade in the winter months to 24 degrees in summer.
Rent a villa or apartment on Tenerife or Gran Canaria if you’re after a lively beach scene and night life. The advantage of a private villa rental over the majority of hotels on these islands is that you can escape to your own holiday haven when the frantic activity of the main tourist centres gets too much.
The awesome volcanic island of Lanzarote offers a wide range of villa rentals including several new exclusive developments which boast private swimming pools, jacuzzis, digital TV etc. But if it’s a rural retreat you’re looking for, consider renting one of the many delightful self-catering cottages available on the unspoilt island of La Palma.
