Finding Villa Rentals in Spain – How Do You Find the Right One?
Finding villa rentals in Spain is easy. Finding the right one to suit your particular needs, tastes and budget is quite another matter.
There are literally hundreds of thousands of Spanish villas to choose from so it can be a daunting task knowing where to start your search for the ideal holiday home. This is especially true if you’re not familiar with this vast country which offers everything from unspoilt mountain villages and medieval cities to countless kilometres of sun-drenched costas (Spain even boasts Europe’s only desert!)
It’s worth starting off with a quick checklist of “must haves” and things to be avoided at all costs. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Must the villa be within easy reach of a local beach? Bear in mind that a sea view can often double the price of your holiday let.
- Is a private or communal pool essential?
- Is it important to have shops, restaurants and nightlife nearby?
- Do you want to be in a tourist resort or a Spanish community?
- Do you need an enclosed garden which is safe for small children to play in?
- Are you planning to be entirely self-catering or will you require a regular maid service and linen changes?
Once you’re clear in your mind about the type of villa you’re looking for, research possible locations using one of the many good travel guides to Spain which are available both in bookshops and online. There are some excellent online guides offer a wealth of good quality, free information about all areas of mainland Spain and the Spanish islands.
Spanish Villa Rental: Location, Location, Location
Choosing the right location is as vital as identifying a suitable villa rental. You can book a seemingly perfect villa but if it’s in Benidorm or Torremolinos and you’re seeking a tranquil break and a taste of the “real Spain”, then you’re doomed to disappointment. Equally, if you’re going to be holidaying with teenagers and young kids who need to be kept entertained, an idyllic rural retreat miles from any “action” is probably not your best bet.
Having come up with some possible locations, try doing an online search using one of the many Internet outfits advertising Spanish holiday villas. Many of them put you in direct contact with the villa owners so there’s no commission to pay to a middleman. The owners pay an advertising fee and you pay the owners (who are often prepared to negotiate on price, especially in mid and low season). The best web sites give you the chance to perform in-depth and highly specific searches so you can find exactly what you’re looking for quickly and easily. Look out for villa advertisers that allow you to search by price, number of rooms, availability, location, property facilities, local entertainment etc.
You may prefer to book through an online or high street agent. But bear in mind that an agent won’t be able to offer you the wide selection of villas that you can find yourself online and you’ll inevitably pay more because of their commission charges.
