The villa rental industry has exploded over the last 20 years, causing a great deal of alarm among local hoteliers many of whom have seen their own livelihoods threatened as a result.
Fed up with high rise apartments and down market hotels, many visitors to the area now prefer the freedom and comfort of their own self-catering villa. It has to be said that the rush to cash in on this lucrative letting business has led to the mushrooming of many ugly villa developments in some parts of the Costa Blanca. The problem has been compounded by, at best, poor planning decisions, and at worst by illegal development and corruption.
But there’s still a huge choice of good quality self-catering villas in the region including lap of luxury villas with private pools, achingly romantic beach villas and rentals set around the Costa’s many excellent golf complexes. Just make sure you carry out the proper checks before you make a booking. It’s a good idea to insist on seeing photos of the surrounding area (not just of the villa) and if you’re still in any doubt ask for references from previous clients who can be contacted.
Costa Blanca Villas in Community Developments
Many Costa Blanca villas are set within community developments (known in Spain as “urbanizaciones”), some of which boast extensive communal facilities such as swimming pools, shops, bars, sports and spa centres etc. This type of villa is ideal for holidaymakers who are keen to socialise with their fellow tourists, like to be surrounded by people of their own nationality and have young kids or teenagers to keep happy. But it’s not for everyone – if you value your privacy and don’t like the idea of high spirited holidaymakers keeping you awake until the small hours, then you’re better off steering clear of community developments. Similarly, if peace and tranquility are top of your holiday agenda then avoid booking a villa in bustling resort areas such as Benidorm, Torrevieja and Calpe.
Venture a short distance inland and you’ll find some delightful old fincas, lovingly reformed, which can be rented either direct from the owners or through local agents. And in the mountainous hinterland of the northern Costa Blanca, there are some real gems nestling on the pine-covered slopes and tucked away within the narrow streets of traditional mountain villages where time seems to have stood still for centuries.
