Romantic beach villas in Spain are becoming something of an endangered species these days thanks to over-development of much of the Iberian Peninsula’s extensive coastline.
Beware of booking your idyllic love nest solely on the evidence of a travel agent’s glossy brochure – the close-up photos of your “dream villa” by the sea may not reveal the concrete jungle of high rise apartment blocks all around it! If you haven’t visited the area before, insist on seeing pictures of the surroundings and not just the villa.
It’s still possible to find a secluded seaside haven as long as you know where to look. Avoid the top tourist spots along the Costa Brava, Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca and consider renting a villa in one of the lesser known coastal areas such as the Costa de la Luz in the south west corner of the country or the Costa Almeria in the south east.
Or head for one of the quieter Spanish islands such as Formentera (the smallest and least developed of the Balearic Islands) or La Palma which has, by and large, escaped the tourist invasion of the other four main Canary Islands.
Even those islands which have succumbed to mass tourism, such as Mallorca and Ibiza, have peaceful pockets of unspoilt coastline where you can find delightful rural cottages to rent and magnificent clifftop villas with ocean views.
Be warned that rental villas directly by the sea (the agents call them “front line”) can command double the price of similar villas just 500 metres inland. But if money’s no object you can take your pick of some truly stunning lap of luxury villas, designed to meet the needs of those hell bent on some serious self indulgence. Many boast their own private beach (often with a speed boat or yacht thrown in for good measure!).
Spanish Honeymoons and Weddings
A romantic beach villa is a popular choice for honeymooners, many of whom are now choosing to have their marriage blessings and wedding celebrations in Spain. Actually getting married in Spain can involve wading through a great deal of bureaucracy unless of course you’re a Spanish national. Theoretically, it’s possible for foreigners to have their religious or civil wedding ceremony in Spain but normally the authorities demand that one of the couple has been resident in the country for two years or more.
Some enterprising ex-pats living in Spain have recently set up wedding co-ordination businesses specifically designed to meet this increasing demand among foreigners for a sun kissed seal on their nuptials
