There are many advantages in finding your Spanish holiday villa through an agent – but there’s also a downside you need to be aware of before you make a booking.
Positive points include the fact that most agents can offer you a broad selection of different villas to choose from in a number of different locations. You just tell them what you’re looking for and hopefully they’ll come up with the goods without you having to do any of the donkey work. Some villa agents can arrange flights and car hire for you so the whole business of booking a holiday home is fairly effortless (which is not always the case when you’re dealing directly with the owner).
A good agent will have either an office or at least a representative in the vicinity of the holiday property so someone will be on hand to give you the keys, introduce you to the villa and show you how everything works.
Spanish Holidays via an Agent: the downside...
Now for the not so good bit! Certain agents handling Spanish rental villas are slapping 25% commission on top of the owner’s asking price and in some cases a great deal more. And these agents are not always the ones who give you the best service and back-up if anything goes wrong.
You may not mind paying a hefty commission fee if it guarantees that everything runs smoothly. But when you pay over the odds only to find the villa hasn’t been cleaned properly, household equipment is broken and the swimming pool water is topped with green slime then you’d be forgiven for feeling a little peeved. Of course things can wrong in the best-managed properties and a good agent will have someone on 24-hour call out to deal with any complaints and rectify any problems. Less reputable agents may be dealing with several properties in the same area and their response to any grievances you may have can be unacceptably slow (if not non-existent).
Also bear in mind that both high street agents and those you find advertising their services on the Internet, may never even have visited the Spanish holiday villa that you’re interested in booking. And they may not know much about the area and local facilities in which case they won’t be in a strong position to answer any important questions you want answered before you commit yourself.
