Valdelinares is located in the Sierra de Gudar in the Spanish region of Aragon. It's one of Spain's smallest ski resorts and you're not likely to want to book a two-week ski-ing holiday here. Facilities are limited and even beginners are likely to tire of the small number of slopes after a few days. But this is a gorgeous area of Spain, virtually untouched by international tourism, so you may want to spend some time exploring it and fit in a day or two of ski-ing at the same time.
You'll find this tiny resort in the village of the same name, near the city of Teruel about 150 kilometres to the north west of Valencia and the Mediterranean coastline. There are just eight pistes - two green, three blue and three red runs - serviced by five drag lifts and three chair lifts. The resort has four cafes, including a small café-bar at the bottom of one of the pistes, a ski school and equipment hire shops. There's no accommodation within the resort itself but there are plenty of hotels in the nearby villages.
The resort is growing in popularity among the Spanish who visit for the weekend from all over Aragon, Catalonia and Valencia. It's also a popular destination for school parties so brace yourself for coach loads of extremely noisy Spanish youngsters!
The resort won't challenge you in any way if you're a proficient skier but it's an extremely pretty place and good fun for kids. Efforts are being made to improve and develop the facilities as ski-ing becomes a more popular past-time among the Spanish. The 6.5 kilometres of runs are kept open throughout the season with the aid of 100 snow cannons.
The après-ski here consists of a cup of coffee or a beer in one of the resort's cafes. But you'll find some wonderful bars and restaurants in local villages such as Alcala de la Selva and Mora de los Rubielos. You'll be able to enjoy the finest Aragonese cuisine at a fraction of the price charged in the popular Alpine resorts.
And the fact that the area isn't on the international ski circuit means it's easy to find inexpensive, good quality hotel accommodation in beautiful, unspoilt surroundings. If you're visiting in peak season periods (Christmas, Spanish fiesta days etc) you may have to travel further afield than the nearest hotel centre at Alcala de la Selva (35 kilometres down the mountain from Valdelinares).
Numerous self-catering apartments are starting to spring up in the area to cater for the increasing interest in Valdelinares. These can be booked through travel agents or directly from the owners who advertise on-line or in the print media.
Mora de Rubielos and Rubielos de Mora are delightful medieval towns, another 35 kilometres drive from Alcala de la Selva, where you can stay in lovely historic buildings which have been converted into good quality hotel accommodation.
Both villages are within a short drive of the smaller ski centre of Javalambra, about 100 kilometres south west of Valdelinares. This resort has seven pistes consisting of one red run, four blues and two greens.
