Tossa has enough restaurants, cocktail bars and clubs to keep the average middle-market "thirty-something" holidaymaker happy during the long hot summer nights. But don't expect the wildest party scene on the Costa Brava here.if that's what you're after, head south to the nextdoor resort of Lloret de Mar.
There are plenty of good restaurants down at the seafront (especially in the old quarter) offering both international cuisine and local Catalan dishes. In high season restaurants and bars stay open well past midnight and many lay on live music and flamenco.
Costa Brava cuisine places a strong emphasis on seafood - local dishes include "suquet" (fish casserole), "simitomba" (fish in garlic sauce), steamed mussels and stuffed squid. If you're not a seafood fan try the local "escalivada" (baked aubergine with red peppers and onion) or some of Girona's famous veal.
Traditional tapas (Spanish snacks), rice dishes and menus del dia (set menus) are all on offer at very reasonable prices.
Foreign food phobics need have no fear as international tastes are well catered for with pizzerias and international dishes more suited to the average north European taste.
Many of the local hotels organise nightly entertainment programmes for children and adults. And between June and September there are plenty of late night bars where you can enjoy classical Spanish music, rock and roll, jazz and the latest chart hits.
For a typically Spanish evening of rumba, flamenco and sevillanas head for bars Ardilla or Tahiti in Calle Sant Josep, Don Pepe in Calle Estolt, Mojito in Calle Codilar or the Flamenco Bar in Calle Sant Pepe.
Try your hand (or mouth!) at traditional "Porro" Spanish wine drinking from a long-spouted jar at La Parra in Calle Sant Josep.
Local fiestas take place throughout the year and if you happen to be in town at the time it's a great way to experience a Spanish-style party - lots of noise, music, parades, dancing in the streets, fireworks and general good-natured mayhem. Ask the local tourist information office for full programmes of any fiestas taking place during your visit.
For a more international night out visit Tipic's in Calle Pintor Francesco Serra which is popular with foreign tourists for its good music and variety of beers.
Chaplin's in Calle Rosa Rissech is an international disco bar with a juke box and dancing..a firm favourite with the Brits.
The Mediterraneo in Calle San Josep is also popular among foreign holidaymakers, offering a good selection of music and cockatils.
Other cocktail bars include Kars in Calle Sant Telm, Mar i Kelm and Seventeen in Calle Estolt. El Rancho in Avenida Costa Brava is a Mexican bar with a variety of music. If you're into acid jazz and house head for Trinquet in Calle Sant Josep.
Tossa isn't big on clubs but there are a few here catering for summer visitors. Catxa Club in Calle Ramon Reig is an open air disco with a swimming pool, the Paradis Club on the seafront plays all the latest chart hits, Ely in Calle Bernats has a good atmosphere and good variety of music and Sivas in Calle Eglesia has everything from grunge and salsa to soul, rock and blues.
If all this isn't enough for you, you've got Lloret de Mar just 12 kilometres down the coast where you can dance till dawn, gamble at the casino and fumble your way through foam parties.
The last bus from Tossa leaves at about 9pm and you get can a fairly cheap taxi back (or hitch a lift if you're lucky!).
