Tossa de Mar's beautiful coastline stretches for 13 kilometres and offers something for everyone. Whether you're a watersports enthusiast, a harassed mum who wants her kids kept busy all day or a naturist looking for a quiet spot to cast off your inhibitions, Tossa is the place for you.
Platja Gran is the main beach at the centre of the resort, in an attractive horseshoe bay dominated by the ancient defence towers on the headland. It's a big sandy beach which is awash with services and water sports in the summer months. Here you'll find public toilets, showers, Red Cross first-aiders and plenty of bars and restaurants.
The beach, which consistently earns the European Blue Flag for cleanliness, has a nautical club and beaching area for boats. You can take a boat ride along the coast to Lloret or one of the other neighbouring resorts. And there are glass-bottomed boats to give you a glimpse of the rich marine life which abounds in these crystal clear waters.
Sports include water ski-ing and parasailing and there are pedaloes and kayaks available for hire. Or just hire a parasol and sun bed for the day while the kids play on the beach!
The nearby Mar Menuda beach (also known as Sa Palma) is equally well served with services and activities. Here you'll find the local scuba diving school which caters for beginners as well as qualified divers.
The north eastern end of the bay is almost closed off by a mass of islands which make this area a magnet for snorkellers and divers.
Local diving clubs organise day and night time excursions to various sites along the coast. One of the most popular dive sites is the nature reserve off L' Estartit, to the north of Tossa, where the islands of Las Medas provide a safe haven for more than one thousand species of marine life.
The Islas de las Medas are on the glass bottomed boat circuit for those who prefer underwater exploration without getting wet.
There are no less than 16 sandy beaches and small coves to the north and south of the town centre - many with watersports, bars and cafes. Others have no facilities except those provided by Mother Nature.and therein lies their particular charm! Take the time to explore these small, unspoilt "calas" where you'll feel as if the busy, brash resort of Lloret de Mar is as far away as Blackpool.
Cala Bona, for example, is a delightful small sandy beach three kilometres to the north of the town - one of the few places where the trees and vegetation reach right down the rock face to the seashore.
Futadera, six kilometres to the north, is another beautiful beach where there are no trappings of modern tourism. Just enjoy the tranquility of this lovely natural setting where the shallowness of the sea gives the water an extraordinary clarity and colour.
Cala Figuera is a naturist beach, three kilometres south of the resort. Two kilometres further along the coast is Tossa's southernmost beach, Cala Morisca, one of the Costa Brava's last truly unspoilt beaches.
For families, there are two big attractions near Tossa - Water World, just outside Lloret de Mar and Marineland, south of Blanes, a short drive south down the coast.
Water World is Europe's biggest water park where the many attractions include a 250-metre ride on a rubber raft over steep hills, round sharp bends and through dark tunnels. There are zig-zag water slides, family pools, "kamikaze" runs and hydrotherapy pools.
Have a go at the bungy jumping and you'll walk away with a "free" T-shirt and photo (you'll have earned it!)
Marineland has dolphin, sea lion and parrot shows, water slides, a reptile house, children's zoo and boating lake.
