Torremolinos is a town simply bursting with activity so you won't be struggling to fill your days here. The main magnet for the tourist throng by day is the nine kilometre stretch of sandy beach where you can sun soak, eat, drink, water ski, paraglide or simply people watch on the promenade.

Sports enthusiasts who prefer to keep their feet dry are also well served here with tennis clubs, a 10-pin bowling alley and a huge sports stadium where international events are staged on a regular basis.

The Ciudad de Torremolinos Stadium has an athletics track surrounded by pine woods with a natural grass football pitch in the centre. The facilities, which are used year-round by world class sportspeople, include a 50-metre covered pool with seating capacity for 800.

For golfers there are 30 courses on the Costa del Sol including many championship courses within easy reach of Torremolinos. There are the Los Lagos and Los Olivos courses in nearby Mijas, Torrequebrada which has hosted many world class tournaments including the Spanish Open, Monte Mayor (Andalucia's most spectacular course), the Seve Ballesteros designed Alhaurin El Grande and the famous Valderrama.

For a great family day out there's the Torremolinos Aquapark with rides, slides, pools and waterfalls.

If you find yourself craving a break from the madding crowds there are three pine forests on the outskirts of the town with fresh water springs and barbecue facilities. This is a popular area for horse riding. The El Ranchito Riding School in Torremolinos provides classes for beginners and experienced riders as well as countryside hacks of two or more hours. The school has a big indoor arena where members of the public can enjoy an "equestrian ballet" of magnificent horsemanship with traditional Spanish music and riders in old-style Andalucian costumes.

Besides the sports stadium, Torremolinos is also home to the Palacio de Congresos (Congress Hall) and the Principe de Asturias Municipal Auditorium. Check with the local tourist office for details of exhibitions, concerts, ballets and other cultural events.

Get to know the town of Torremolinos, starting with a jaunt along its main artery - the pedestrianised Calle San Miguel where hundreds of European visitors gather to enjoy the hustle and bustle of this delightful shopping centre. Buskers, street vendors, ice-cream sellers and colourful street cafes make this more than just an average shopping experience.

Pop into one of the Spanish bars to sample a delicious (and cheap) local fresh fish dish. At the end of the street you'll find an ancient tower, the only one still standing of those which gave the town its name (Torremolinos literally translates as "Tower Windmills").

Visit the old fishermen's district of La Carihuela where there's a great beach and some excellent chiringuitos (beach bars) with some of the best seafood dishes on the Costa.

From here you can walk all the way to the port of the neighbouring resort of Benalmadena. Stroll eastwards along the promenade past the rocky peninsula of Santa Clara to the next beach Playamar.maybe stopping along the way at one of the many tempting chiringuitos.

If you're visiting at the end of September you'll be able to join in the town's biggest fiesta of the year - the feast of patron saint San Miguel when a giant "romeria" (outdoor party) attracts more than 200,000 revellers in a typically Spanish "knees-up" to honour the town's patron saint.
