The beach life of Torremolinos is one of the busiest on the Costa del Sol - from toddlers with their buckets and spades to experienced scuba divers, this resort has something to offer everyone down at the seafront.
The town's nine kilometres of sandy beaches consistently win the European Blue Flag for cleanliness and are well serviced with sun beds, shades, lifeguards and excellent local chiringuitos (beach bars).
Local sports include fishing, sailing, water ski-ing, wind surfing, diving and parascending. The long modern promenade which separates the town centre from the beaches is lined with bars and restaurants offering almost every type of local and international cuisine.
The original fishermen's quarter at La Carihuela has survived the onslaught of mass tourism and retains much of its old world charm with many of the old fishermen's cottages still standing in its narrow streets. There's a wonderful beach here and some first class seafood restaurants serving some of the best fresh fish on the Costa. From here you can stroll along the promenade as far as the neighbouring resort of Benalmadena, stopping for some light refreshment at some of the chiringuitos along the way.
To explore the marvellous underwater world of the Mediterranean, pop along to Simply Diving in Calle Carmen Montes where they cater for complete beginners and experienced divers alike. Local dive sites include the Marine Reserve at Almuñecar where you can see an abundance of marine life at depths of 12 to 40 metres; also an excellent area for snorkelling.
For experienced divers there are trips to Gibraltar where you can explore the wrecks of WW2 vessels, and to Tarifa, at the southernmost tip of Spain, which offers some of the best diving locations along the southern coastline.
Simply Dive will provide snorkelling equipment, buoyancy aids and space on their boats for non-divers (when not over-subscribed).
There's a great day out for all the family at Aquapark Torremolinos - the biggest water park on the Costa del Sol, with 70,000 square metres of rides, slides, pools and pure pleasure. The attractions include a wave pool, tropical lake, wild river ride, a bubble pool, kamikaze death slide and foam slides. For the less active there are restaurants and mini golf. The park is open from May to September.
Another family attraction is the Sea Life Centre in the port area of the neighbouring resort of Benalmadena. There are more than 30 fascinating displays of sea creatures, from shrimps to sharks, with feeding demonstrations and special presentations. The centre has gift shops, bars and cafes.
Venture further afield and cross the Straits of Gibraltar to Morocco where you can spend a hectic day's haggling in the Kasbah. Local travel agents organise regular excursions.
