Huge modern hotels with a stunning mountain backdrop, sea views and palm fringed gardens overlooking the Mediterranean - these are what characterise modern day Torremolinos. In fact the rapid development of the town's high-rise hotels from the early 1960s was the major factor behind the construction of Malaga International Airport. Torremolinos now accounts for more than 10% of the total number of hotel rooms in the whole of Andalucia.
There's a good selection of hotel accommodation near the beachfront, including a larger than average number of four-star hotels. Middle of the range three-star hotels are plentiful but there are only a few of the cheap hostals and pensiones that proliferate in other resorts, particularly those favoured by Spanish visitors.
If you plan to travel in high season your best bet is to book a package deal well in advance. Rooms are cheaper and easier to come by in low and mid season. If you turn up without a booking, try the local tourist offices which may be able to provide details of hotels and hostals with spare rooms.
One of the top class hotels is the Royal Al Andalus right in the centre of Torremolinos, just 400 metres from the beach and 700 metres from the town centre. Facilities at this four-star modern hotel include a swimming pool, solarium, satellite TV, shops, bar, café, billiards room, terrace and garden.
In a prime spot on the beachfront at El Bajondillo beach you'll find the luxurious four-star Melia Costa del Sol. It's just a 10-minute walk from the town centre or get there in five minutes taking the lift directly outside the hotel. There are 540 rooms with wonderful sea views, air conditioning and satellite TV. Services includes snack bars, restaurant, swimming pool and fitness centre, room service and a full programme of entertainment.
The four-star Aloha Puerto Sol in Salvador Allende has equally good facilities including shops, a hairdressing salon and heated pool for out of season use. The huge outdoor pool is in a fabulous location, fringed by towering palm trees and overlooking the Mediterranean and seafront promenade.
For a smaller, cheaper hotel with basic but clean and comfortable accommodation try the Adriano in Avenida de los Manantiales. It's a family hotel with en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning and a restaurant serving breakfasts and buffet dinners. Or there's the no-frills, value for money Hostal Castilla in Calle Manila where you get all the basic facilities for a very reasonable price. Hotel Cabello in the old fishermen's quarter of La Carihuela is in the same low-budget bracket but has the advantage of sea views from most rooms.
There are plenty of high rise apartment blocks, some attached to hotels so you get all the advantages of self catering accommodation combined with the convenience of hotel services.
Around the town and along the coast there are hundreds of private villas for rent, the vast majority with private pools. This can make a perfect yet affordable family holiday which often works out cheaper than a hotel if you're travelling in a group as you normally pay a set price for the villa rather than paying per person.
There are numerous campsites along this stretch of the Costa del Sol where you can pitch your tent or rent a cheap self-catering chalet near the beach. Camping Torremolinos is located near the sea on the N340 national road at Loma del Paraiso. The site has a restaurant, supermarket, hot showers, bungalows and mobile homes for rent. It's also dog friendly.
