Santa Susanna has a two-kilometre sandy beach which merges into the neighbouring resort of Malgrat de Mar. During the summer months there are plenty of sports and leisure activities to enjoy down at the seafront and if you venture a little further afield you'll find some delightful hidden coves along this stretch of coastline.
The beach is clean and family friendly and there's a good range of services including sun bed and parasol hire and a Red Cross base.
Water sports include windsurfing, water ski-ing, parasailing and kayaking. You can also take one of the many boat excursions along the coast. Some of the boats operate as water taxis so you can spend some time at one of the other popular resorts, such as Tossa de Mar or Lloret de Mar, before catching a boat back.
The promenade is well served with bars and restaurants. Next door Magrat, to the north, and Pineda de Mar, to the south, also have good sandy beaches flanked by ice-cream parlours, bars and street cafes.
The hills of the Massif Montnegre natural park extend right down to the sea to the south of Santa Susanna, creating some charming rocky coves if you fancy a day away from the madding crowd.
And further up the coast you can explore the wild coastline of the Costa Brava with its many unspoilt fishing villages and sheltered coves nestling at the base of some dramatic cliffs.
For a "Club 18-30" type day at the beach, head for the Costa Brava tourist capital, Lloret de Mar. But just a little further to the northeast you'll find tranquil bays in beautiful natural scenery, untouched by tourism.
The Costa Brava coastline is popular with scuba divers and the area boasts many diving schools and clubs which organise both beginners' lessons and some fascinating trips for qualified divers.
At Tossa de Mar, 30 kilometres up the coast from Santa Susanna, the north eastern end of the bay is almost closed off by a mass of islands which make this area a magnet for snorkellers and divers.
One of the most popular dive sites is the nature reserve off L' Estartit, another 40 kilometres north of Tossa, where the islands of Las Medas provide a safe haven for more than one thousand species of marine life.
If you prefer underwater exploration without getting wet you can visit the islands in a glass bottomed boat.
For a fun-filled family day out visit Marineworld, just north of Santa Susanna, where there are dolphin and sea lion shows, more than 300 animals, including seals and otters, and a water park.
Just outside Lloret de Mar, north east along the coast, is Water World which is the biggest water park in Europe. Attractions include a 250-metre long raft ride over roller coaster hills, round sharp bends and through dark tunnels. The park has a host of thrill rides and fun pools and you can even have a go at bungy jumping.
