The nightlife in Salou is one of the liveliest of all the Spanish coastal resorts. The place is awash with bars, restaurants, live entertainment and all night clubs. Whether you want traditional flamenco, a Mexican meal, karaoke or a wild foam party you'll find it all here.

Many of the bars and pubs are geared to the British and Irish markets with draught bitter, quiz nights, impersonators and comedians.

A popular family pub is the Rover's Return, near the main beach, where every night is party night. The entertainment starts in the afternoon with film shows, games and quizzes then leads into a disco which carries on till the early hours.

The oddly-named Knabbel and Babbel, in the Calle Mayor, is a lively bar and restaurant with good music every evening in high season. The bar has an innovative "drink card" system which allows you to buy a 20-token card giving you big discounts on each drink.

Gabbers is one of the resort's longest established pubs, geared to families with games, competitions, quizzes and some big cash prizes. Children are entertained in the early evening before the disco starts with a resident DJ. This is also the place to go for a big English fry-up to cure your hang-over the next morning (you'll get REAL British sausages rather than the very different Spanish variety!)

The Queen's Bar, between Salou and Cambrils, is a popular haunt with British visitors. It's five minutes from the resort by taxi or you can walk along the seafront (about 25 minutes). The restaurant stays open until 10.30pm and there's entertainment until 2am throughout the summer months. The pub offers draught beers, live music, karaoke, Irish theme nights and a nightly disco.

There are several Irish bars in town including Murphy's in Calle Penedes which is the place to go for your pint of Guinness and to watch live sports matches via satellite.

As for restaurants.well, the world's your oyster! And fresh seafood is very much to the fore in the traditional Spanish restaurants serving typical Catalan dishes such as the delicious fish soup (rossejat) and "suquet" fish stew. These dishes are served with some wonderful sauces such as the local "romesco", made from crushed almonds, paprika, wine and olive oil, and "picada" - a blend of crushed hazelnuts, almonds, pine nuts, garlic and olive oil.

The neighbouring resort of Cambrils is renowned far and wide for its first class seafood restaurants. This is also the place to go if you're finding Salou's nightlife too frantic and you fancy a quiet moonlit stroll on the beach.

If international cuisine is more to your taste, there are burger bars and fish and chips joints, pizzerias, Chinese, Indian, French, Dutch and German restaurants.

When it's time to go on to the disco, you'll be spoilt for choice - in fact you'll probably find yourself being bombarded with discount entrance tickets and free drink vouchers. Snoopy's in the town centre is one of the busiest night clubs, offering theme nights and partying till 6am. Kiss, Charlie Chaplin's, Tramps and Crocs are among other top night spots favoured by international tourists. Flashback in Plaza Europa has a more Spanish feel. Many of the clubs offer free admission but be prepared for high bar prices.

The kids will enjoy the permanent funfair open every night at the end of the Jaime I seafront promenade. And the illuminated fountains, designed by architect Carels Buigas who masterminded Barcelona's famous fountains, are a wonderful spectacle of water and colour after the sun goes down.

Look out for performances of the Sardana, the famous Catalonian dance in which participants move in circles to the strains of flute-like instruments.

A tradition on warm summer nights is to listen to the soulful "habaneres" fishermen's folk songs down at the port or on the different beaches of the resort. In the interval, the audience is usually served with the typical ron cremat (a hot rum toddy).
