Salou Holiday Travel Guide & Vacations - Beaches - Salou Apartment Accommodation & Hotel Lodgings - Car Hire in Salou Spain - Salou Nightlife & Restaurants

There's a wealth of entertainment and leisure activities on your doorstep in Salou so you may not have time to go further afield than the resort itself and the Port Aventura theme park, especially if you're only staying here for a few days. But if you get the chance, try to fit in some day trips and excursions to the many fascinating places of interest in this region.

But first let's talk about the many pleasures which await you at the Universal Studios park which is, after all, the main reason why most tourists come here.

You'll need at least two days to fit everything in and if you spend three days there you won't run out of things to see and do. The park is right on the edge of the resort and there's a mini road train running to and from it throughout the day.

Its most famous feature is the terrifying Dragon Khan - Europe's biggest roller coaster with no less than eight 360-degree loop-the-loops. This is the ultimate white knuckle ride (in fact my knuckles had to be prized off the safety bar by my two children at the end of it!).

The evil Khan dominates the skyline for miles around, presenting an ominous challenge to those who like to have their nerves tested to the full. The signs outside say it's not recommended for people with epilepsy or heart problems - a more appropriate sign might read "only recommended for the most foolhardy".

Be warned that although the ride only lasts a few seconds you may face a long wait to get on it, especially in peak season.

The park is divided into five themed lands - China (where you'll find the Dragon Khan), Polynesia, Mexico, the Mediterranean and the Far West. It's chock-a-block with thrill rides, water slides, live entertainment, bars, restaurants and shops.

If you're planning to go for more than a day, buy a multi-day pass in advance and you'll get a discount. It's also advisable to take your own waterproof gear with you if you don't want to get drenched on the water rides (and stung by the high costs of waterproofs within the park).

The Aquopolis water park at La Pineda, nine kilometres along the coast from Salou, is another popular family day out.

Golfers may want to leave the rest of the family at Port Aventura while they enjoy a day out at one of the excellent courses in the area. There are 18-hole courses in Reus and Mont-roig del Camp. The nine-hole Club de Costa Dorada near Tarragona has a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, a children's playground and restaurant.

Try to fit in at least a day visit to the fascinating city of Barcelona with its mind blowing Gaudi architecture, famous fountains and Gothic cathedral. A stroll along the pedestrianised Las Ramblas with its colourful flower stalls and street cafes is a must.

Regular buses run from Salou to Tarragona which is well worth a visit with its wealth of ancient buildings and monuments including Roman aqueducts, amphitheatres and monasteries.

Local tour operators organise excursions to the breath taking Benedictine Monastery at Montserrat, perched high in the mountains amid extraordinary rock formations which have attracted pilgrims for thousands of years.

The Salvador Dali museum in Figueres, where some of the painter's most important works are housed, is another popular day trip from Salou.

In the hinterland around the resort you'll find many medieval towns and villages to explore, with castle ruins, ancient walled towns and huge monasteries built in the Middle Ages.
