There are so many wonderful day trips and excursions to be enjoyed from Salobrena that you'll probably want to hire a car for at least part of your holiday.
Granada is only 40 minutes drive away and boasts one of Spain's top tourist attractions - the fabulous Moorish palace of Alhambra with its magnificent royal rooms, fountains, Arabic courtyards and the famous Generalife Gardens. Make sure you book tickets before you go in high season or you may not get in.
Another 45 minutes drive on from Granada and you'll be in the ski resort of Sol y Nieve in the Sierra Nevada mountain range - a beautiful drive at any time of year.
Or head south of the sierra into the wonderful wilderness of the Alpujarras - arguably Spain's most spectacular regions where tiny ancient villages cling impossibly to mountain peaks and life seems not to have changes for centuries.
In the Andalucian hinterland you can explore the delightful "white villages" of Frigiliana and Competa and visit the fascinating medieval town of Ronda with its breathtaking gorge.
The fascinating Caves of Nerja, with Europe's longest stalactite and paintings from 20,000 BC, are a short drive west along the coast.
The historic and vibrant cities of Seville, Cadiz, Jerez and Cordoba are all within easy driving distance as is the hotly disputed rock of Gibraltar. If you're visiting Gibraltar be prepared for long delays at the control point (apparently caused by a deliberate go slow on the part of the Spanish authorities!)
These are some of the questions you should be asking yourself before choosing your car hire company:
- Does the company have a dedicated desk inside the airport where you can collect your keys and sort out the necessary paperwork and any problems? There's nothing worse than arriving in the middle of the night to find no car.and no-one to complain to!
- Does the company give a commitment on the quality of its cars - are they, for example, all under a certain age?
- Will you have to pay the local IVA tax (Spanish VAT) of 17.5% or is it included in the price?
- Does the company offer "no quibble" insurance to cover such things as collision damage and theft? Is unlimited third party insurance and basic personal accident damage for the driver and occupants included?
- Will you have to pay an "excess" charge in the event of an accident?
There have been instances of "motorway pirates" targeting foreigners in hired cars on Spain's southern coast so keep all your valuables with you when you stop at a service station and never leave the keys in the ignition. The favourite trick is to try and flag you down on the hard shoulder on the basis that something's wrong with your car. Ignore anyone who tries to do this and check your car at the next service area if you think there's a problem.
