Salobreña has escaped the concrete high-rise development which characterises so many Spanish coastal resorts - there are only a few hotels here and no skyscrapers. Much of the holiday accommodation is provided on the outskirts of the old town in self-catering apartments and villas.
Hotel Salobreña is one of the best-known hotels in the area - situated in a prime location on a rocky headland a little way out of the town on the N340 national coastal road. This 3-star hotel has wonderful sea views and attractive gardens which include one of the old watch towers which are peppered along the Spanish coastline.
The hotel has an outdoor pool overlooking the sea, a solarium and satellite TV in all rooms. Club Class rooms are available with air conditioning, king-size bed, minibar and whirlpool bath.
If you're looking for something a bit different, try the beautiful Casa de los Bates between Salobreña and Motril. It's an imposing 19th century palatial home which commands the attention of passing travellers - you can't fail to notice this impressive building set on the top of a hill off the main coastal road with wonderful views of the sea and Salobreña Castle.
The hotel is one of Spain's "rusticae" hotels which are characterised by their special charm and which are normally set in areas of great natural beauty or within buildings of historic interest. Casa de los Bates has 20,000 metres of beautiful gardens, reached by a marble staircase. There are magnificent palm trees more than 100 years old, waterfalls and coral fountains. The interior has a distinctly aristocratic air with period furniture and old family photos.
Cheaper accommodation can be found in one of several smaller hostals and pensiones in and around the old town of Salobreña. Facilities are more basic but are usually clean and comfortable with a very Spanish feel. Some hostals provide en-suite bathrooms and excellent home-cooked traditional food. They generally give excellent value at an extremely reasonable price.
Try Hostal San Juan in Calle Jardines, a completely renovated building designed around a traditional Andalucian inner courtyard with attractive Arab archways. Rooms are air-conditioned and have en-suite facilities.
Casa Faldas de Castillo (literally "skirts of the castle") is, as its names suggests, just below the castle walls and is ideally situated for exploring the old quarter with its narrow streets and tempting tapas bars. The accommodation consists of two renovated houses, one with three double bedrooms, the other with two doubles. Both have fantastic views of the castle, sea and the Sierra Nevada.
There are several other hostals in the town centre and five "pensiones" - the facilities of a pension are normally less extensive than those of an hostal but the accommodation is normally cheap and cheerful and it's a great way to enjoy a taste of the real Spain. Better have your dictionary with you because you can't bank on a pension owner speaking English.
Numerous local agents handle the letting and management of the many self-catering apartments and villas in the area. There's a good range of villas with private pools to choose from - if you're travelling in a big group this can often work out cheaper than a hotel as you normally pay a set price per villa rather than paying per person.
