There are so many fascinating places of interest to visit within easy reach of Roses that you may want to hire a car for some or all of your stay here.

With a hired car you'll be able to explore the delightful rocky coves which pepper the wild and rugged coastline of the Costa Brava either side of the resort. In the hinterland there are some enchanting medieval towns to visit including Castelló d´Empúries-Empuriabrava, nine kilometres from Roses. Places of interest in the town include the 14th century Santa Maria Gothic cathedral, the 11th century Santa Clara Covent, the Count's Palace and the 14th century medieval jail.

One of the top tourist spots in the region is the Salvador Dali museum at Figueres, just 18 kilometre west of Roses. The museum houses some of this extraordinary artist's most famous works.

You can visit the Salvador Dali House Museum at the picturesque marine village of Cadaques, 20 kilometres north along the coast.

Try to find time for a day trip to Barcelona which has to rank as one of the world's most beautiful cities. The fairytale cathedral, mind-blowing Gaudi architecture and famous fountains are often the most treasured memories of visitors to this part of Spain. Don't miss a stroll along the pedestrianised Las Ramblas with its colourful flower stalls and street cafes.

The kids will enjoy a day out at Marine World, just south of Blanes 120 kilometres down the coast. This is a good family day out with a range of attractions including dolphin and sea lion shows.

Local hotels, travel agents and car hire firms can arrange rental cars for you but if you're holidaying in high season make sure you book in advance to avoid disappointment. You'll be more comfortable with air conditioning if you're travelling in July or August.

These are some of the questions you should be asking yourself before choosing your car hire company:

  • Does the company have a dedicated desk inside the airport where you can collect your keys and sort out the necessary paperwork and any problems? There's nothing worse than arriving in the middle of the night to find no car.and no-one to complain to!
  • Does the company give a commitment on the quality of its cars - are they, for example, all under a certain age?
  • Will you have to pay the local IVA tax (Spanish VAT) of 17.5% or is it included in the price?
  • Does the company offer "no quibble" insurance to cover such things as collision damage and theft? Is unlimited third party insurance and basic personal accident damage for the driver and occupants included?
  • Will you have to pay an "excess" charge in the event of an accident?

For just popping around Roses and the local area you may decide to go for a motorbike, scooter or pushbike all of which are available for hire here.
