For many foreign tourists, Oliva is synonymous with the Oliva Nova Golf and Country Club with its four-star hotel, direct access to the beach and excellent sports facilities.
But for the thousands of Spanish visitors who flock here each summer, a holiday in Oliva means renting a self-catering apartment or villa near the beach. There are lines of apartment blocks set back from the beach near the bustling northern end of the coastline near the yacht marina.
This area is a virtual ghost town out of season but with the start of summer the restaurants and ice-cream parlours throw up the shutters, wooden beach bars spring up overnight and the whole place becomes a hive of activity.
In the residential areas of Oliva Nova and San Fernando there are hundreds of villas to rent, most with private or communal pools. This is becoming an increasingly popular type of holiday with foreigners who like the freedom and comfort of self-catering accommodation. It can also work out cheaper than a hotel if you're travelling in a group as you normally pay a fixed price for the villa rather than paying per person.
Many of the villas flank the fairways of the 18-hole Oliva Nova golf course and so are ideal for golf enthusiasts (less enthusiastic families can spend the day on the lovely beaches, just across the sand dunes from the course).
If you're not on too tight a budget, then the Oliva Hotel offers some superb facilities including a health and beauty centre with Turkish bath, sauna, jacuzzi, fitness room and relaxation room with music therapy. There are also various beauty treatments available.
The hotel's 242 rooms all have TV, air conditioning, mini bar and terrace. For some serious pampering, opt for one of the rooms with private solarium and plunge pool.
There are three restaurants with local Valencian and international cuisine - the main "El Olivo" restaurant overlooking the central swimming pool area, the "Columbus" and the "Albatros" near the clubhouse.
If you're looking for more affordable hotel accommodation there are numerous Spanish "hostals" in the town and along the coast. Facilities here are more basic but you normally get an en-suite bathroom and good quality, home-cooked local food.
There are six registered campsites along Oliva's coastline including the first grade Kiko Park which boasts a wide range of excellent facilities include a beachfront restaurant, café, snack bar, supermarket and children's play area. The park managers organise a full programme of entertainment for children and adults - everything from treasure hunts and fancy dress competitions to dance classes and beach volleyball. There are also beachside bungalows available for rent here.
Another first grade site is Ole at Aigua Morta beachfront. There are five other second grade sites in the area, all with good facilities.
