NerjaThe town of Nerja is located in the Spanish region of Andalucia on the Costa del Sol. Nerja has become a popular tourist resort in recent years whilst managing to avoid the skyscraper development and mid-summer madness which now characterises much of coastal Spain. The resort is at the eastern end of Malaga province, just 50 kilometres drive from the international airport.
Nerja, which takes its name from the Arab Narija meaning "abundant fountain", nestles at the foothills of the Sierra de Tejada mountain range and boasts 16 kilometres of coastline with seven beaches within walking distance of the town.
Many foreigners have bought holiday or permanent homes here and visitors flock here in the summer months giving the resort a distinctly international feel. Yet the town centre retains much of its old world charm with narrow, winding streets, whitewashed houses and balconies overflowing with brightly coloured bougainvillea and geraniums.
The local farmers still use oxen for ploughing and mules to bring their fresh produce in from the fields.
The town's most famous feature is its Balcon de Europa (Balcony of Europe)- a wide palm-fringed promenade built on the cliff top on the site of the old Moorish castle. The promenade has magnificent sea views and is the town's most popular place to meet and enjoy a drink, some tapas or a meal in one of the many local bars and restaurants.
A somewhat older but equally famous landmark are the Nerja caves, three kilometres from the town centre. These spectacular caves include a huge natural cavern which has been transformed into a theatre. Archaeological finds here reveal the caves were inhabited 25,000 years BC. The cave's treasures include wall paintings believed to be more than 20,000 years old and a 63 metre stalactite which is the longest in the world.
Nerja offers a wealth of entertainment and attractions including more than 500 bars, cafes and restaurants offering traditional local dishes and a wide variety of international cuisine.
The beaches are clean and well served with restaurants, sun beds and plenty of water sports.
Traditional fiestas are held here throughout the year when the town becomes a riot of colour, music, parades and partying in true Spanish style.
Nerja is ideally placed for exploring the beautiful hinterland of Andalucia where, within a short drive from the coast, you will find yourself in the "real Spain" where life hardly seems to have changed for hundreds of years.
Just one and a half hour's drive inland is the fascinating city of Granada with its awe-inspiring Alhambra Palace. Drive on for another hour and you'll be in the Sierra Nevada mountain range - holidaying in Nerja enables you to sunbathe in the morning and ski in the afternoon!
