Car hire is not essential in Nerja if you're staying in or near the town centre and beaches there's a wealth of entertainment, shops and facilities within the resort. If you're interested in seeing some of the fascinating sights of Andalucia, local travel agents organise regular excursions to all the major places of interest including the nearby caves and attractions further afield, such as the amazing Alhambra Palace in Granada. But if you plan to spend a good part of your touring and sightseeing then a rental car is the best way to do it.
Drive inland to the picturesque "white villages" of Frigiliana and Competa. Or visit the beautiful medieval town of Ronda, perched on a towering plateau and divided in two by its famous and awe-inspiring gorge.
The fascinating cities of Seville, Cordoba, Cadiz and Jerez are all within easy reach. Granada is only one and a half hour's drive from Nerja - don't go on spec to see the Alhambra Palace in high season though because visitor numbers are restricted and this is one of Spain's biggest tourist attractions. Book your tickets in advance from a local tour operator.
Drive on for another hour and you'll be into the majestic Sierra Nevada mountain range with its popular ski slopes. Depending on the time of year, you may find yourself sunbathing in Nerja in the morning and ski-ing in the Sierra Nevada in the afternoon!
These are some of the questions you should be asking yourself before choosing your car hire company:
- Does the company have a dedicated desk inside the airport where you can collect your keys and sort out the necessary paperwork and any problems? There's nothing worse than arriving in the middle of the night to find no car.and no-one to complain to!
- Does the company give a commitment on the quality of its cars - are they, for example, all under a certain age?
- Will you have to pay the local IVA tax (Spanish VAT) of 16% or is it included in the price?
- Does the company offer "no quibble" insurance to cover such things as collision damage and theft? Is unlimited third party insurance and basic personal accident damage for the driver and occupants included?
- Will you have to pay an "excess" charge in the event of an accident?
There have been instances of "motorway pirates" targeting foreigners in hired cars on the Costa del Sol so keep all your valuables with you when you stop at a service station and never leave the keys in the ignition. The favourite trick is to try and flag you down on the hard shoulder on the basis that something's wrong with your car. Ignore anyone who tries to do this and check your car at the next service area if you think there's a problem.
