Mojacar Car Hire - Getting around
Mojacar Holiday Travel Guide & Vacations - Beaches - Mojacar Apartment Accommodation & Hotel Lodgings - Mojacar Tourist Attractions & Things to do - Majacar Nightlife & Restaurants
Car hire is advisable in Mojacar, especially if you're staying in one of the hotels or apartment complexes away from the main seafront promenade. When you've exhausted the wealth of activities at your local beach you can venture inland to explore the Almerian "badlands" (Europe's only desert), tour the coastline or head for Granada and the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
With a rental car you'll be able to take a trip inland to visit the famous troglodyte villages where modern-day cave dwellers have burrowed their extraordinary homes out of the soft rock. You'll find cave houses in several villages in Almeria including Alhabia, Gador, Benahadux, Fondon and Laujar de Andarax.
Visit the wild west theme parks of Mini Hollywood and Texas Hollywood near the town of Tabernas, 60 kilometres south west of Mojacar. You'll be able to enjoy some cowboy style entertainment amid the remnants of the movie sets left behind by the makers of hundreds of spaghetti westerns.
Explore the rugged wilderness of the Cabo de Gata nature reserve at the south eastern tip of Spain.
Granada is less than two hours drive to the west of Mojacar and is well worth a day trip. Visit the fabulous Alhambra Palace, deservedly one of the top tourist attractions in the whole of Spain (don't go without booking tickets in advance in high season as visitor numbers are restricted).
Between Granada and the coast is the magnificent Sierra Nevada mountain range, home to Europe's most southerly ski resort. On its southern slopes you'll find the ancient mountain villages of the Alpujarras, one of the most stunningly beautiful regions of Spain. A day's touring here will take your breath away (strictly not for those with vertigo!)
These are some of the questions you should be asking yourself before choosing your car hire company:
- Does the company have a dedicated desk inside the airport where you can collect your keys and sort out the necessary paperwork and any problems? There's nothing worse than arriving in the middle of the night to find no car.and no-one to complain to!
- Does the company give a commitment on the quality of its cars - are they, for example, all under a certain age?
- Will you have to pay the local IVA tax (Spanish VAT) of 17.5% or is it included in the price?
- Does the company offer "no quibble" insurance to cover such things as collision damage and theft? Is unlimited third party insurance and basic personal accident damage for the driver and occupants included?
- Will you have to pay an "excess" charge in the event of an accident?
There have been instances of "motorway pirates" targeting foreigners in hired cars in southern Spain so keep all your valuables with you when you stop at a service station and never leave the keys in the ignition. The favourite trick is to try and flag you down on the hard shoulder on the basis that something's wrong with your car. Ignore anyone who tries to do this and check your car at the next service area if you think there's a problem.
