You'll probably want to hire a car for at least part of your stay on Menorca. Most of the resorts are relatively small and quiet with limited tourist attractions. But with a car you'll be able to explore the many delights of this small island - its extraordinarily beautiful coastline, the lush pastures of the interior, historic towns and prehistoric sites.
Car hire is cheap and readily available here. The island is less than 50 kilometres long and 20 kilometres at its widest point so with the freedom of a car you'll be able to reach all its furthest flung corners within a day.
If you're a hiring a car for the whole of your holiday you can discover a different beach every day - after all, there's more than 100 to choose from.
Visit the island's capital of Mahon in the south east and the historic town of Ciutadella on the west coast.
The pretty fishing village of Fornells on the north coast is well worth a visit. King Juan Carlos of Spain pops over from his summer palace in Mallorca to enjoy the fresh lobster here.
History buffs will want to explore the many ancient sites and monuments which have been uncovered throughout the island. Bronze age tombs, watch towers and prehistoric troglodyte settlements with cave paintings are all to be found in abundance here.
And no holiday to Menorca is complete without a trip up to the highest point at Mount Toro which offers spectacular views of the island (and even of Mallorca on a clear day).
If you're holidaying in high season make sure you book a car in advance to avoid disappointment. You'll be more comfortable with air conditioning if you're travelling in July or August.
These are some of the questions you should be asking yourself before choosing your car hire company:
- If you've booked the car to be waiting for you on arrival you'll want to know if the company have a dedicated desk inside the airport where you can collect your keys and sort out the necessary paperwork and any problems. There's nothing worse than arriving in the middle of the night to find no car.and no-one to complain to!
- Does the company give a commitment on the quality of its cars - are they, for example, all under a certain age?
- Will you have to pay the local IVA tax (Spanish VAT) of 16% or is it included in the price?
- Does the company offer "no quibble" insurance to cover such things as collision damage and theft? Is unlimited third party insurance and basic personal accident damage for the driver and occupants included?
- Will you have to pay an "excess" charge in the event of an accident?
