The vast majority of Mallorca's visitors are package holidaymakers who stay in apartment complexes and modern high-rise hotels. But if you're an independent traveller looking for something different, you can take your pick of converted farmhouses, lovely rural fincas, ancient monasteries and 16th century mansions.
Mallorca has a wealth of holiday accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. There are sumptuous world-class hotels to accommodate the international jet set and small Spanish pensions for those who are watching the Euros and like to "go native".
A large proportion of the island's modern hotels are centred around the Palma-Magaluf seafront in the south west. Here you'll find everything from modest one-star accommodation to celebrity suites in luxurious five-star hotels.
Most package holidaymakers are accommodated in middle market hotels and holiday complexes near the beach. Most of these hotels have their own swimming pools and sports facilities, a full entertainment programme and buffet-style meals included in the price.
Whichever type of accommodation you choose, you'll be subject to the "eco-tax" introduced in the Spring of 2002. The amount of tax depends on the type of holiday accommodation (you'll pay the maximum of €2 per night if you're staying in a five-star hotel). It's designed to generate funds to protect Mallorca's environment from the damaging effects of mass tourism.
Not that this nightly charge is likely to be of undue concern to those fortunate enough to stay in the likes of Castillo Hotel Son Vida, a beautiful 13th century castle with magnificent views of the bay of Palma. This five-star hotel is set in 1,200 acres hectares of sub-tropical parkland surrounded by two 18-hole golf courses, one of which is for the exclusive use of guests.
The hotel is worth a visit even if you can't afford to stay there. You'll find it at Urbanizacion Son Vida, five kilometres from the centre of Palma.
Golfers (the well-off variety) will also appreciate the superb facilities of the Marriott Mallorca Son Antem Golf Resort and Spa at Llucmajor. The hotel boasts the most extensive spa facilities on the island and is ideally placed for both the local beaches and for exploring the historic villages of the Mallorcan countryside.
Puerto d'Andratx, at the south west corner of the island, is an exclusive resort largely undiscovered by package holidaymakers as it's forbidden to build hotels here. Self catering apartments and villas are available to rent - if you can afford one, you'll be able to rub shoulders with the millionaire jet set who moor their fabulous yachts in the beautiful harbour.
There's a strong "agrotourism" movement in Mallorca which has led to charming farmhouses, manor and country estates being converted into holiday accommodation. Some have guest rooms or separate cottages whilst others are available to rent as a whole.
And for those looking for total peace and tranquility in far flung corners of the island, there are converted monasteries and religious sanctuaries where you can spend your holiday.
Try the Castell d'Alaró, a 10th century castle of Arab origin at Puig d'Alaro in Mallorca's rural heartland to the east of the Tramuntana mountain range. Or the 13th century Sanctuario de Lluc at Escorca in the north east.
There's a 14th century religious sanctuary at Puig Sant Salvador in Felanitx in the south east of the island.and many more former places of worship which have now opened their doors to international tourists.
