Lloret de Mar is a self contained resort where you'll find enough beaches, bars, restaurants, shops and entertainment to keep you busy throughout your holiday. There are all kinds of sports available within the resort and some great days out and excursions to be enjoyed within easy driving distance.
Besides a wealth of water sports provided along Lloret's nine kilometre stretch of coastline, there's a huge range of other activities here including go-karting, tennis, parascending, pleasure cruises, horse riding and ten pin bowling.
There's a mini-golf course for family fun and three professional standard golf courses nearby. The Club de Golf Angel de Lloret is on the coastal road going south towards the neighbouring resort of Blanes. The course (currently nine hole but with plans to extend it to 18) is in a beautiful natural setting, close to the beach. It's suitable for players of all standards and is an ideal place to start for complete beginners. Club facilities include a driving range, putting green, tennis, sauna, gym and jacuzzi.
The 18-hole pitch and putt course at Urbanisation Papalus has a bar, restaurant, swimming pool and floodlit practice area. There's a nine-hole pitch and putt course at Ecogolf Lloret on the road inland towards Vidreres.
For a taste of the area's history and culture, pop along to the Verdaguer Cultural Centre where you can see relics excavated from the local Puig de Castellet Iberian settlement dating back to 250 BC. The centre also houses a collection of naval models charting the region's seafaring history as well as exhibitions of paintings, photographs and sketches reflecting Catalonia's history and culture.
But you don't really come to Lloret for history and culture! You'll find more of that in the next door resort of Tossa (to the north) and especially in the magnificent city of Barcelona, 70 kilometres south along the coast. Local tour operators organise excursions to Barcelona which is well worth a visit with its fabulous Gaudi architecture, the famous pedestrianised "Las Ramblas" with its street markets and cafes, the old Gothic quarter and the Picasso Museum which houses some of the master's most important works.
Or forget the culture and head for a fun day out at Water World, just outside Lloret on the road inland to Vidreres. This is Europe's biggest water park with a host of attractions including a 250 metre long rubber raft ride over steep hills, round sharp bends and through dark tunnels.
Just south of the neighbouring resort of Blanes is the Marineland complex with dolphin, sealion and parrot shows, water slides, a reptile house, children's zoo and boating lake. Free transport to both water parks is available from the centre of Lloret.
The Universal Studios Port Aventura theme park is 150 kilometres south of Lloret near Tarragona. This Disney-style adventure park is famous for its terrifying Dragon Khan roller coaster (with its eight loop-the-loops) and makes a great family day out with masses of thrill rides and live entertainment.
