Lloret de Mar offers just about every kind of water sport imaginable along its 10-kilometre stretch of coastline. Whether you want to be on the water, in it, above it, under it or beside it you'll find a way to do it here!
The main beach of Lloret is a 1,630-metre stretch of coarse sand flanked by high-rise hotels, apartments, shops, bars, restaurants and ice cream parlours. The beach consistently wins the European Blue Flag for cleanliness and offers safe bathing with lifeguard and Red Cross services on hand.
You can hire roller blades on the promenade or try your hand at water ski-ing, jet ski-ing, parasailing or sea kayaking. For the less adventurous there are sun beds and shades for hire and wherever you stake your claim on the beach you won't be far away from the nearest liquid refreshment. The beachfront is well served with burger bars, pizza joints and international restaurants.
One kilometre south west from the town centre is Fenals Beach which is about half the size of the main beach but is equally well served with bars and sports facilities. The Fenals Maritime Club provides sailing courses and boat hire.
A little further down the coast you come to the beautiful bay of Sa Boadella, a 250 metre stretch of sand in a beautiful natural setting. This is a quieter beach with fewer services but there's a beach bar and ice cream parlour.
Santa Cristina, three kilometres south west of the town is a lovely 450-metre beach where the pines and lush vegetation cover the cliff face almost down to the water's edge. This is the only one of Lloret's beaches with very fine sand. Facilities here include sun beds and shades for hire, showers, jet skis and Red Cross patrols.
To the north east of Lloret you'll find Canyelles Beach with its yacht marina and plenty of bars, shops and restaurants. Roller blading and water ski-ing are available here.
Between the main sandy beaches and further afield along the coast there are plenty of small, sheltered coves, unspoilt beaches and pretty fishing villages practically untouched by modern tourism.
Travel north along the coast to L'Estartit and you can take a trip in a glass-bottomed boat to the islands of Las Medas, once a refuge for pirates and smugglers but now a protected nature reserve where more than one thousand species of marine life flourish. The Lloret Diving Centre, at Fenals Beach, organises excursions to Las Medas and other dive sites along the coast.
A popular day out for the kids (and dads who never quite grew up!) is a visit to Water World, Europe's biggest water park just outside Lloret on the road to Vidreres. The park has Europe's only water "big dipper" which involves a hairy 250 ride on a rubber raft over steep hills, round sharp bends and through dark tunnels. There are zig-zag water slides, family pools, "kamikaze" runs and hydrotherapy pools.
Have a go at the bungy jumping and you'll walk away with a "free" T-shirt and photo (you'll have earned it!)
Just south of the neighbouring resort of Blanes is the Marineland complex with dolphin, sea lion and parrot shows, water slides, a reptile house, children's zoo and boating lake. Free transport to both water parks is available from the centre of Lloret. If you're on a package holiday, your local tour rep may be able to arrange discounts for both venues.
