Lanzarote has 250 kilometres of coastline and more than 100 beaches. There are long, sandy beaches awash with tourist facilities, quiet coves for naturists, natural volcanic pools and a crystal clear ocean paradise for watersports enthusiasts.
Whatever your passion, you can indulge it here. Enjoy the freshest fish dishes at a harbourside restaurant, take a ferry ride to the beautiful island of Graciosa, try your hand at kitesurfing.or how about a spot of big game fishing?
Puerto de Carmen is Lanzarote's busiest resort area with Playa Grande at its centre - a one-kilometre stretch of golden sand flanked by bars, restaurants, shops and ice cream parlours. The other main beaches here are Playa de los Pocillos, which stretches for 1,230 metres, and the 850-metre long Playa de Matagorda.
All these beaches are well served with tourist facilities such as sun beds and shades for hire, public phones, beach and watersports and wheelchair access. The calm waters here are ideal for windsurfers.
Playa Blanca, at the southernmost tip of the island, was once a tiny fishing village but has now flourished into a popular tourist centre with golden beaches bordered by a picturesque promenade lined with bars, restaurants and shops. Seafood fans will enjoy the fish restaurants here.
An hourly ferry service to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura runs from the small harbour. This makes a good and inexpensive day trip.
East along the coast from Playa Blanca you'll find Punta de Papagayo with its landscape of volcanic ash, crystal clear waters and fine white sands. This wild stretch of coastline consists of many little bays and coves - some quite difficult to access but well worth the effort.
The Costa Teguise is the second most popular tourist area of the island after Puerto del Carmen. This part of the coastline is the closest to the island's capital, Arrecife, and consists of some beautiful beaches including El Redacto. Follow the coast from the lovely San Gines lagoon, which harbours small inshore fishing boats, to the bustling seafront promenade of El Redacto.
Guacimeta, a little to the south, is another lovely beach on the Costa Teguise - but be warned that it's the nearest beach to the international airport so not always the most tranquil of spots!
For something completely different, try El Golfo beach on the west coast. This is a volcanic crater filled with a lagoon of emerald green sea water which provides a stark and stunning contrast with the blackness of the gravel beach.
One of the wildest beaches on the island is El Risco, in the north west, which can only be accessed by boat or via a scramble down the cliffs at Famara. This area is home to Lanzarote's oldest salt flats and an archaeological site where many prehistoric remains have been unearthed.
At Arrieta, in the north east corner of the island, even toddlers can paddle safely in the natural pools, formed by petrified lava, of Punta Mujeres.
Take a 20-minute ferry ride from Orzola in the north to the paradise island of La Graciosa where you'll find some of Lanzarote's most beautiful, unspoilt beaches.
Those with a taste for adventure can try their hand at a spot of shark or swordfish hunting. These waters are among the top hunting grounds in the world for big game fishermen.
