The long, sandy beaches of La Pineda lie at the heart of the Costa Dorada, which means golden coast. The gently shelving sand, excellent beachfront leisure and entertainment facilities and the popular Aquopolis water park make this a perfect seaside holiday destination for families. You can watch the world go by at one of the many bars and streets cafes on the promenade, take the kids for a pedalo ride, enjoy a variety of watersports.or hire a sun bed for the day and just concentrate on your tan.
The main beach in Pineda is flanked by the 2.4 kilometre long Passeig de Pau Casals which is one of the longest seafront promenades in Catalonia. It's a hive of activity in the summer months with street parties, local fiestas, children's entertainment and pretty plazas which are popular meeting points by day and night. In the middle of the promenade there's the distinctive "Pines of Mariscal" sculpture with its gigantic metal dishes which you might love or hate but can't possibly ignore!
This area is bustling with life throughout the summer - hotels, holiday apartments, shops, restaurants and Aquopolis are all within easy walking distance of the promenade and the main La Pineda beach.
If you're holidaying with children they'll probably want more than one day at the water park which has a wealth of attractions besides the dare devil, high speed chutes. The brave (and foolhardy) can enjoy themselves on the kamikaze runs, white water rapids and "Black Hole" while younger children are able to play safely in the special infants' area which has a giant turtle, rubber castle and gentler slides. Aquopolis also has a wave pool, two large lakes and a hydrotherapy pool. For those who prefer to keep dry the leisure facilities on terra firma include mini-golf, trampolining, a small zoo, various games and plenty of bars and cafes. A dolphin show is included in the price. If you plan to visit Aquopolis more than once (as the parents of small kids you may not have much choice) buy multi-day tickets to get worthwhile discounts. And to avoid the crowds, make an early start.the place gets packed after 3pm in high season with people making use of cheap half-day tickets.
The three resorts of La Pineda, Salou and Cambrils merge into one seemingly endless stretch of coastline but each has something different to offer. Pineda's Punto del Raco beach marks the boundary with neighbouring Salou to the south west. Salou's main Platja Levant beach is a 1,200-metre long summertime playground, packed with Spanish and foreign visitors enjoying everything from jet ski-ing and parasailing to volleyball and other beach games. It's the busiest of all the Costa Dorada beaches but head just a little further southwest and you'll find the tranquil fishing port of Cambrils. This is the place to enjoy a quiet evening stroll along the beach, watch the day's catch being landed by the small fishing boats and savour some of the finest and freshest seafood in Spain.
