La Palma is not a major package holiday destination and you won't find high rise hotels lining the beachfront here as you will in parts of neighbouring Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
The island's relatively few hotels are mainly centred in the capital, Santa Cruz, and the resort areas of Los Cancajos, on the east coast, and Puerto Naos on the west coast.
There are also a number of "aparthotels" where you can enjoy the freedom of a self-catering apartment together with the convenience of hotel facilities on your doorstep. Villas and apartments are available to rent on an individual basis and there are many delightful Canarian farmhouses and fincas which have been converted into self-catering accommodation.
One of the Spanish Government's luxury Paradors is to be found on the island at Breña Baja on the east coast, eight kilometres from Santa Cruz. This modern four-star hotel has been built in a typically Canarian style and affords wonderful views of the sea, coastline and mountains. The restaurant serves local Canarian dishes with wine produced from the island's vineyards. A gym, sauna and large outdoor swimming pool set in beautifully landscaped gardens are among its many attractions,
There are several seafront hotels in the capital, one of the biggest being the three-star Hotel Maritimo which is close to the town's historic centre. The hotel is a good base for touring the island and is near local shops, restaurants and the seafront promenade.
Five kilometres along the coast at Los Cancajos, you'll find one of the best equipped hotels on the island - the four-star Hotel Taburiente Playa. The hotel is 300 metres from Los Cancajos Beach and 150 metres from local shops, bars and restaurants. Facilities include two freshwater pools (one heated in the winter), a pool bar, sauna, massage rooms and live entertainment most evenings. All rooms have private balconies with wonderful views of either the sea or mountains.
The nearby Costa Salinas apartment complex is linked to the hotel and visitors are able to share many of its facilities. This is a family complex of 140 apartments each with their own lounge, bathroom and fully equipped kitchenettes. There's a large swimming pool with a separate children's area, a poolside snack bar and buffet restaurant.
Hacienda San Jorge at Los Cancajos is a top quality, award-winning aparthotel with an excellent range of facilities including a gym, sauna, steam bath, massage rooms and a beautiful salt water pool. The complex is set in lovely gardens just 50 metres from the beach. It's also home to a spectacular indoor orchid garden.
On the other side of the island, at Puerto Naos, you'll find more self-catering apartments and the large Hotel Sol la Palma which boasts all mod cons including rooms with air-conditioning, satellite TV and mini-bars. The 306-room hotel has a tennis court, health and fitness centre and a full daytime and evening entertainment programme.
In the north at Barlovento there's the elegant four-star Hotel la Palma Romantica, 600 metres above sea level with breathtaking views of the Atlantic and the island's volcanic mountains. The hotel has excellent facilities and is renowned for its fine Canarian cuisine.
For something a bit different rent a luxurious Canarian manor house, a converted water mill or one of the many rustic homes which have been sympathetically restored to provide highly select holiday accommodation.
Many of these houses come under the umbrella of the Isla Bonita Rural Tourism Association which was founded to foster "eco-tourism" and protect the island from the concrete development which has marred some of Spain's bigger resorts.
