There's been an explosion in the number of companies offering guided walking holidays in Spain in recent years as a result of an increasing number of foreigners who want to see more of this fascinating country than its over-developed coastline.
Many of the more experienced and independent hikers prefer to strike out alone, relishing the excitement of discovering their own unspoilt beauty spots and roughing it with a bed roll and back pack. Either way, make sure your guide is someone who speaks the local language (not forgetting that there are several different languages and many dialects in Spain) and has lived in the area for some years. That way, you'll get to enjoy the best walking routes and scenery while enjoying the many pleasures of "going native" which so many foreigners miss out on.
In many parts of Spain, particularly Andalucia in the south, walking holidays are combined with other activities such as yoga, painting and Spanish culture (flamenco, Spanish cooking and language lessons might be provided along with daily guided walks). This can be a good way of keeping non-walking partners, relatives and friends entertained and is particularly popular among single travellers hoping to meet like-minded individuals.
