Gran Canaria is a small island and you'll be able to visit all the main tourist attractions with organised excursions from the main resort centres. For the more adventurous there are jeep safaris, quad bike tours.and camel riding through the dunes.
But if you plan to spend more than a day or two exploring the island you'll probably want to hire a car for some or all of your stay here.
With the freedom of a car you'll be able to tour the volcanic mountainous interior, the rugged landscapes of the north, the banana plantations and lush valleys of tropical fruits. Discover the mountain village of Teror, to the south west of Las Plamas, which appears to float in the air, 575 metres above sea level. The mountain views are breathtaking and the village has several impressive colonial-style houses.
In the centre of the island you'll find the snow-covered mountain peaks of Pozo de las Nieves and Los Pechos, both rising to nearly 2,000 metres. Well away from all the tourist trappings of the south, there's the village of San Bartolome de Tirajana, hidden inside a volcanic crater and only accessed by narrow mountain streets.
Guia, in the north west, is also worth a visit to see the Cenobio de Valeron cluster of caves, enclosed by a sea of petrified lava.
At Agaete, on the north west coastline, you can see an impressive canyon carpeted with plantations of papayas, avocados, coffee and bananas. Here you'll also find the natural spa waters of Balneario de los Berrazales.
Las Palmas, the capital, is a must if you want a shopping spree and a taste of the island's history and culture. The city boasts many fine restaurants, museums and historic buildings.
Puerto de Mogan, in the south west, is a pretty fishing village with narrow flower-filled streets of traditional style houses.
These are some of the questions you should be asking yourself before choosing your car hire company:
- If you've booked the car to be waiting for you on arrival you'll want to know if the company have a dedicated desk inside the airport where you can collect your keys and sort out the necessary paperwork and any problems. There's nothing worse than arriving in the middle of the night to find no car.and no-one to complain to!
- Does the company give a commitment on the quality of its cars - are they, for example, all under a certain age?
- Will you have to pay the local IVA tax (Spanish VAT) of 16% or is it included in the price?
- Does the company offer "no quibble" insurance to cover such things as collision damage and theft? Is unlimited third party insurance and basic personal accident damage for the driver and occupants included?
- Will you have to pay an "excess" charge in the event of an accident?
