Fuerteventura Car Hire - Getting around
Fuerteventura Holiday Travel Guide & Vacations - Beaches - Fuerteventura Apartment Accommodation & Hotel Lodgings - Fuerteventura Tourist Attractions & Things to do - Fuerteventura Nightlife & Restaurants
Fuerteventura is just 98 kilometres long and 30 kilometres across at its widest point but there are plenty of interesting places to visit so you'll probably want to hire a car for at least part of your holiday.
Jeeps and cross-country motorbikes are also available for hire here but be warned that the normal insurance may not cover you for going off road.
With a car you'll be able to explore the large plains, lavascapes, volcanic mountains and unspoilt villages of the interior.
Visit the capital, Puerto del Rio, where a third of the island's inhabitants live. This is a bustling port with many historic buildings, museums and a wealth of bars and restaurants.
On the other side of the island, there's the ancient capital of Betancuria with its beautiful cathedral and an archaeological museum where you can see the prehistoric remains of the island's first settlers.
Take a trip to the north to see the spectacular sand dunes and beaches of Corralejo, Fuerteventura's premier resort area. From here you can take a boat ride to the uninhabited island of Los Lobos or to Lanzarote, the extraordinary "Land of the Volcanoes".
At the other end of the island you can enjoy the fabulous beaches of Jandia, go on a camel safari or take the kids to the zoo.
Another interesting trip is to visit the wreck of the American Star on the remote beach of Playa de Garcy on the west coast. The ship, once the pride of the United States maritime industry, was wrecked in a storm on its way to Thailand where it was to have been converted into a floating hotel.
These are some of the questions you should be asking yourself before choosing your car hire company:
- If you've booked the car to be waiting for you on arrival you'll want to know if the company has a dedicated desk inside the airport where you can collect your keys and sort out the necessary paperwork and any problems. There's nothing worse than arriving in the middle of the night to find no car.and no-one to complain to!
- Does the company give a commitment on the quality of its cars - are they, for example, all under a certain age?
- Will you have to pay the local IVA tax (Spanish VAT) of 16% or is it included in the price?
- Does the company offer "no quibble" insurance to cover such things as collision damage and theft? Is unlimited third party insurance and basic personal accident damage for the driver and occupants included?
- Will you have to pay an "excess" charge in the event of an accident?
