Tourism has been relatively slow to arrive in Fuerteventura compared with the neighbouring islands and the big resorts of mainland Spain where the package holiday industry has been making its mark since the 1960s.
The island has managed to avoid the concrete strips of high rise hotels which now characterise so many of the Spanish costas. The majority of holiday accommodation here is provided in modern but tastefully designed hotels and apartment complexes, generally built to a high standard.
Besides the package holiday accommodation there are small family-run hostals, luxurious private villas to rent and many delightful farms and fincas which have been converted into small but highly select hotels and guest houses.
Most hotels are situated on or near the beachfront in the capital Puerto del Rosario and the most popular resort areas of Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste and Costa Calma.
The best range of budget accommodation is available in Corralejo in the north and Caleta de Fuste on the east coast. Here you'll find a good choice of middle-market hotels and apartment complexes geared to families. Most provide on-site sports and leisure facilities and usually a full entertainment programme for adults and children.
Many have children's swimming pools, play areas and kids' clubs to keep the youngsters happy with daytime and early evening entertainment. The better tour operators organise varied nightly entertainment - everything from quizzes and karaoke to bingo and cabaret shows.
One of the most luxurious hotels on the island is the five-star Elba Palace Golf which overlooks the golf course and sea at Caleta de Fuste. Facilities include a swimming pool, piano bar, fitness centre with sauna and massage suites and a golf shop.
Of the many good quality hotels which overlook the beautiful white sand dunes of Corralejo, the Riu Tres Islas is one of the best and long-established. Facilities at this four-star hotel include two swimming pools and a separate children's pool, floodlit tennis courts, a gym, sauna and massage rooms.
Fuerteventura is a popular naturist haunt and several hotels are "nudist-friendly".which doesn't mean you sit down to your bacon and egg breakfast completely starkers! But there are "clothes optional" areas and easy access to local naturist beaches.
The Hotel Costa Real at La Pared, for example, has a spa area where it's acceptable to bare all and many of the sea-facing suites have private terraces and balconies (ideal for working on your all over tan!). Local beaches are not officially classed as naturist but nudity is accepted.
For something completely different try one of the "eco-tourism" hotels or rural houses located inland, away from the main tourist centres. There are some beautiful former farmhouses, built in the 19th century, which have been sensitively converted into holiday accommodation whilst retaining their original Canarian character.
Casa Tile, for example, is a typical Fuerteventuran rustic house built five generations ago in Roque, a small village in the municipality of Oliva. It has two rooms, a small gym and swimming pool all overlooking a traditional interior courtyard where there's a wood oven and barbecue. You won't find any karaoke here but it's an ideal place to relax, explore the beautiful beaches of Cotillo and the Mascona lavascape and sample the local fresh seafood.
