Fuengirola Holiday Travel Guide & Vacations - Beaches - Fuengirola Apartment Accommodation & Hotel Lodgings - Car Hire in Fuengirola Spain - Fuengirola Nightlife & Restaurants

Fuengirola offers a wealth of activities and places to visit in and around the resort. There's something for everyone - a good range of sports, great shops, amusement centres and easy access to other major coastal resorts and Andalucian cities.

One of the most popular attractions is the innovative and imaginative zoo which has some fascinating features including a "moonlight" area which you can visit late at night to watch the nocturnal activities of animals such as leopards, flying foxes and porcupines.

There's a tropical forest with lush vegetation, rivers and waterfalls where you can see crocodiles, tigers, lemurs, meerkats and giant snails. There are no cages here, just natural barriers like bridges and riverbanks so you have a real feel of life in the wild. Where the more dangerous creatures roam, you view from behind the safety of bulletproof windows so you can be within inches of a grinning croc without fear of losing an arm!

This pioneering zoo has restaurants, a large children's play area, an animal farm for younger visitors and is also geared for wheelchair access.

On the outskirts of the town at Mijas Costa you'll find another great family day out at Mijas Aquatic Park - a wonderful water world of kamikaze slides, wild river rides, body ski-ing and gentler water-based fun and activities. This area's clement climate allows the park to operate daily from the end of April to the end of September. Don't forget the sun cream because many lily-skinned Brits have left here badly burned!

In the neighbouring resort of Arroyo de la Miel there's the Tivoli World amusement centre with thrill rides, carousels, gondolas, flamenco and wild west shows, exotic gardens and enough activities to leave you (and the kids!) totally exhausted after a good value for money day out. Tivoli is open throughout the year but only at weekends from November to March.

If shopping is your particular passion, indulge yourself by visiting the workshops of the local master craftsmen who specialise in exquisite hand-made creations of pottery, precious metals, leather, wood and iron. On Tuesdays Fuengirola hosts one of the biggest and busiest street markets on the Costa del Sol and on Saturdays there's a big "rastro" or car boot sale where you can buy everything from a puppy to a "valuable" antique.

For a taste of the town's history visit the castle, built in the mid 10th century but practically destroyed by the Christian armies who retook the town from the Moorish invaders in 1487. The castle was rebuilt in the 18th century to protect the area from smugglers and pirates and the great part of its walled defences remain today.

Or if you fancy a peek at how the rich and famous spend their spare time, pop along the coast to Marbella, 30 kilometres west of Fuengirola. Ogle the multi-million pound yachts in Puerto Banus and celebrity spot from one of the glitzy bars and restaurants which line the quayside.

Algeciras, where you can take the ferry over to Tangier, is only 50 kilometres west along the coast.

Local agents provide regular excursions to various local places of interest along the Costa and inland - visit the hotly disputed rock of Gibraltar, discover the beautiful white villages in the Andalucian hinterland, sample the sherries of Jerez or marvel at the wonders of Granada's Alhambra Palace.
